I have a 96 S10 4.3 with 221,000 miles. I've ran mb1 5-30 since I got her at 86,000 miles, and few months ago switched over to Castrol 0-30. I've read on numerous LS1 boards how great this oil is.

I'm at 5,000 miles now on my 2nd service interval with this oil and the oil looks like my mb1 5-30 would with 3,000 miles. Why isn't it black? I know my engines 100% clean inside, I've had the pan off before to replcae the gasket.

I had my castrol tested and the test came back very well, but I've researched it and found the mobil 0-40 has alittle better detergent package.and will provide pretty similar results.

How is the 0w not to "thin" for my engine?

I just changed my brothers 94 S10 with the 4.3 V6 over to mb1 0-40 last night. It had GC 0-30 last oil change. Although his truck has 393,000 miles on the original drivetrain (knock on wood) it used about 1/8 of a qt of oil in 5,500 miles. Don't know how

The 0W is just a range to measure the viscosity at 40 degrees Celsius.

The second number is a number to measure the viscosity (both are just ranges) when at 100 degrees Celsius.

Castrol 0W-30 is the best synthetic Castrol out there. Great not to shear and almost a 40 weight. Those are its pros. Good protection, but not like the old green stuff. Why, oh WHY did they quit making the green formula????

BTW, if the Castrol came back showing great results, just stick with it.

I do not know why but i predicted Castrol would s c r e w all of us in the end and they did! That is the problem with most companies they only give the good stuff when they do not have a choice once they can substitute in something cheaper they almost always do! I am sure it was probably a problem with too much capacity at a given plant at the time so they sent the stuff here to sell. Once they had the demand in Europe for that raw ingredient they stoped importing it to the USA since they can get a lot more for it over seas any way! So then they just needed to get a line going in the USA with far cheaper ingredients to supply to those new customers that had bought it before and where now convinced of it's quality. I absolutely hate castrol because this is the norm for them! Bait and switch! They did with PAO when they switched to GIII and they did it again when they went from the green GC to the golden USA 0W30! It is not even right to call it GC anymore!

I was told by both Pennzoil and Mobil not to use any 0W-xx oil in any car with high mileage. Their reasoning was it will find its way out of the engine in the form of a leak.

Gold GC has the same volatility than Green GC does. I posted the results in the Euro forum. There is most likely no change in base oils between the two oils; I wonder where you got your thought. Additives did change and I do like Green GC's additives better. The change to the MB 229.5 spec has a lower allowed chlorine content and I think that had something to do with the additive change. The MB 229.5 has more rigorous performance requirements but that doesn't mean that the Green that met MB 229.3 is weaker than the Gold that meets MB 229.5.

Gota call B.S on this one frank, why?, because outside sits two
cars and one truck with 0w30 in the pan and not one drop of
oil lost, and all are over 100,000 miles,my truck has 200,000 miles!!!
