Vehicle experience many short trips (< 2 miles ~50% of time). Towed 3,000 lb trailer for 300 miles. Air filter has about 6,000 miles on it and seems to be removing more dirt. Used a M1 oil filter. Any comments/observations are appreciated. Amsoil was old formulation.

Blackstone's Comments:
We found very little change since the last sample. All wear is right around average for this type of engine, which along with the steady wear trend, is a very good indication of normal wearing parts and careful operation of engine. Air and oil filtration - see silicone and insolubles - look great. We found nothing to suggest any mechanical problems. We will amend your report with TBN when we get more sample kits in.

Very nice report on the new 0w-20 mobil ss. Look at he bearing wear.

Well looks like the thin oil when formulated properly is doing a great job. The old debate that thicker oil provides better protection heats up just a tick more. Bob with his recent tests is more evidence to the thin oil advantages in certain situations.

you would think in a v8 that called for 5w30 that it would be too thin. I guess this oil is just fine in the engines they are provided for. Im running mobil 1 0w20 in my vehicle now, and all I can say is better gas mileage and smoother startups.

Lets not forget that Mobil 1 30 wt is around 62 cSt and sometimes ends up less than 60 and here we have 56 cSt. Really not much difference. The main difference between the 0w30 M 1 and 0W-20 M 1 is the color of the bottle.

Synthetic seems like a waste in this application, short trips, less than 3k drains...

sure, but add towing into the situation. And for cost, what about those ppl who go to jiffy lube and pay 27 bucks total with tax for oil that comes out of the barrel? Do we really know if its even legit to be a decent motor oil? Heck, a synthetic change costs just about the same if not less if you get your oil at walmart and a motorcraft or supertech filter.

Jay,
The motor has about 14,000 miles on it. I thought the air filtration was better since Si has decreased? Maybe the seals are producing less Si. Not sure about the source of the Cr. I've checked the intake etc., several times due to high initial Si levels. If there is a leak, I can't find it. Using Purolator paper filter.

Chris,
Until the warranty is gone I'm only interested in 3 maybe 5k runs. I changed the oil short of 3k due to a long upcoming roadtrip.

Thanks for your comments!

Would anyone add the "brew"(Scaeffers #132/LC) to this oil? How would it affect the viscosity during the cold winter months? I too have a Ford F150(02') with the 5.4 V8 and was considering trying the M1 0W-20 this winter.

Wow, thats a great TBN reading. You could probaly go a good 8k on that oil. I think Bob will be proven right and that some of these thinner oils with greater flow will prove to be better in some cases.

The engine oil has less than 3k miles on it - can't really tell if the 20 weight oil is any good for it.

Race it for 7500 miles and show us a UOA.

I'll continue to use 5w30 in the 5.4L SOHC V8

Lets see, he tows regularly which puts him square into the severe duty schedule of 3,000 miles, also while under warranty. Yet you can't tell if this oil is any good.

My take is that wear is not bad, but not great either. With the lower mileage on the oil, I'd expect if that the wear numbers increased in a linear fashion the numbers would be merely average on a 5,000 mile interval. It does appear that the oil held up fine though.

The 0w20 is doing no worse than a regular 5w30 or 5w20 here, but doesn't appear to be anything special in terms of wear, though it appears the oil can go longer.

AHC, Does this truck have a auto or a stick? because I have always wondered if an automatic transmission is easier on an engine than a manual. I Never have found information or input.

F150 and 5.4 = no stick offered, only the auto.

The stick is availble behind the 4.2l V6 and 4.6l V8 only in the F150's.

The 5.4 can be had with a 6 speed manual in the Superduties though.
