HI guy`s

Was at my local parts store and found a bunch of X-1R Dos Nitrous Octane Booster that normaly sells for 10.00 a bottle for 1.00.it says for off road use only. Was wondering if this stuff is safe for my 1990 Mitsubishi Montero that is having a little summer spark knock.Says it has MMT,Nitromethane and Powr-x in it.what do you think?

I'd guess that the Manganese might not be too cat friendly.

But don't know for sure.

BTW, isn't Nitormethane exactly the opposite of an octane booster ?

I say leave the Nitromethane for the TF dragsters and funny cars.

I'm thinking this stuff will play havoc with the emission controls on your car, which is why they put the "for off-road use only" warning on the bottle.

My 2¢

The tiny amount of Nitro in solution is pointless.

The MMT is a sorta OK antiknock compound. BUt I hate what it does to plugs and other parts of your cylinder head. Coats them with red fuzziness.

I say skip it, but for a $1....just try it for your knock and see what happens. Check your plugs.

Thanks for the input guy`s.I think I will pass on this deal or mabe get some and try to sell it on ebay.

Molakule has said before that MMT is good for protecting the valve seats. That film it leaves is also a protective coating I guess. It also obviously raises octane, not much in the amounts we get over the counter though.

I think the nitromethane is probably just a gimmick, theres probably about .01ml in there or something. Some people are experimenting with it (nitro) in water/alcohol injection systems though.

MMT was tried as a substitute for tetra ethyl lead and found to be nearly as bad for cats as lead. It does lubricate the valves as did lead, but it also coats the egr valve and coats the substrate and active ingredients in the cat.

I don't think one bottle will do much harm, but I sure would not use it on a regular basis.

Never use nitromethane in a normal car or truck engine. Nitromethane is used only in drag racing cars. The reason they use the stuff is that it can increase horsepower 50% compared to what you could achieve with a gasoline engine with the same engine, etc. Nitromethane is very hard on an engine-the experts know how to make a engine last the short period of time the engine will be operating in a drag race. Nevertheless there are frequent blown engines. Methanol is used in racing cars such as Indy cars. It increases horsepower about 10& and is much easier on an engine.

There are still people who do stuff like putting mothballs in gasoline tanks to make a car run faster. Be prepared to rebuild engines more often if you do this.

Mystic,
I'd be much happier putting mothballs in the tank than MMT.

I'm not that happy putting mothballs in my house 'though.

Mystic,

He is not talking about running straight nitro, only adding a bit to gasoline. It will make a difference in performance even in low dosage. Although a small amount used ocassionally probably would not do any harm, I also wouldn't do it on a street engine.
