Hello there!

Well, it's oil change time, and here's what I was thinking of doing. I have enough random bottles of different oils to make up for one oil change. Since new GF-5 oils are on the way, I wanted to clear this old oil out.

My car takes 3.6L of oil, so here's what I would throw in:

-2L of Castrol GTX High Mileage 5w30
-0.5L of Castrol Syntec 5w30
-0.5L of castrol syntec 5w-40
-0.5L of PYB 10w-40
-A small amount of Valvoline Maxlife engine protector (discontinued as far as I know)

And as far as an oil filter, I was thinking of re-using my current filter. It's only been run for about 5000km.
Filter is a Fram XG. The synthetic filter said to be good for 10,000km. (older silver can, not the gold can)

So what does everyone think of this as far as an OC goes? Will the oil combination work out? Also, how long to run this mix for??

And about the filter, does that sound fine?? I know Amsoil discontinued their long drain filter for most toyotas because they plug filters fast or something?? Does that mean I should avoid running this XG to 10,000??

Thank you for your time!

Cheers

I'm not one to re-use filters but I would have no problem doing, and have done the rest of your plan :D

I will use whatever I can find that is half full quarts etc, during a cleanup time, and do a fill with whatever oil I find. I haven't had any issues, nor would I expect any..

Yup, been there - done that. My car didn't notice a thing.
Shame to throw away a still-useable oil filter, but i've never been one to re-use one of these.

I'll stray from the pack here and say change it.

I'm going to be in the minority here, and say take it all to recycle and buy some new oil and filter for this change.

I know others mix on this board, and probably nothing wrong with it, but I'm overly OCD about keeping the same oil in the car. Oil and filters are cheap enough that I would just buy new to know what was in the crank.

Mix away. My beater is using PYB 5W20 and Mobil 1 Truck and SUV [I think that's what they call it] 5w40, and a bottle of Lubro Moly. No problems to report. I would change the filter, but I'm sure it is GTG for another round.

Not only the minority ,but dead wrong. Oil is very expensive in Canada and Toyota's are not picky about either brand or weights. I should know , I have owned at least 6 of them. All of them went over 200000 miles on bargain oils or mixes and some on synthetics went 10000 mile oci's. My 93 has 284000 , my 95 has 204000 currently. I run whatever i get cheap or free. You can be ocd yourself, and spend all you want on boutique redline ,amsoil or motul, but this is not a vw.
As long as your oci's are within reason (3-5000) ,go for it.
I would spend the 5 bucks for a filter. Nothing worse than putting a used filter on and having a gasket fail . been there done that. oil all over the ground that is wasted. Now if that filter is already on the car, keep it on. Those cans are pretty tough.

I'd use that mix in the summer w/o a problem. I'd be a little more concerned with mixing in the extreme of winter because I want to make sure that PPD's are working as designed.

Thanks for the replies! It sounds like it will be fine to mix these oils! So I will go ahead and do that! How long can I expect to run this mix??

Also, for those who say re-use the filter, should I just leave it as is, with old oil and all? Or take it off, drain it, (screw driver in adbv maybe) then put it back on?? I would like to get as much old oil out as possible, but I also don't want sealing problems!

Thanks again!!

You probably risk more negative consequences by trying to put the old filter back on with seal issues than keeping that little bit of old oil in the filter. Maybe run this OCI 3-4 thousand km instead of 5 thousand km considering the mix and old filter.

IMO 3-5000 miles should be fine.
and yes, take off the filter and drain as much as possible, inspect the gasket and reinstall to same torque spec.

It's nice to see you didn't turn this into a personal attack on another member with your rant. I guess anyone who disagrees with you is just "dead wrong". Check my sig, no boutique here, and I only paid $1.35 a quart for the oil I use, so I'm all about a budget oil change.

OP, as I said, it's just my opinion. Plenty mix and get great miles out of there vehicles. Good luck with what you decide.

Just changed the oil/filter in my 04 Altima 2.5s. I used:
1qt Castrol Start-Up 10W40
1qt Castrol Syn Tech 10W40
3.5 qts PEAK Oil FAR 5W30
ProLine filter #14459 a bit larger than the #14610

I say: Mix 'em & worry not! Ridiculous to throw out perfectly good oil. (They're required to mix without harmful interactions anyway) I'll face this situation myself in 2-3 years. My current stash, all bought several years ago now, includes Formula Shell 5&10w30, Havoline 5&10w30, 6 qts PZ Plat 10w30, 3 qts Hav syn 10w30, and TropArtic 5w30- maybe a bit more I can't remember. Lessee- the Dakota 3.9 V6 is 4.nothing qt oil capcity, including filter. These days I'm unlikely to drive much more than 12K mi/yr. W/3K mi OCI, that's 16 qts/yr. Hmm...OK, maybe it's more like 3-4 yrs!

Latest fill on Ecotec 2.2 was
2 qts Exxon SuperFlo 5w30
1 qt Castrol Syntec Blend 5w30
1 qt MC 5w20

Takes care of odds and ends. After this it's Costco Formula Shell 5w30 for a while.

While I try to avoid mixing, I have done it and would again.
Your case is a perfect example of why and when it makes sense to mix.
I would run this brew 4K myself, and I would splurge on a new oil filter, but I suspect 5K+ would be fine, as would reusing the old filter.
If I had a car that took 3.6 liters, I'd just dump four liters in, just as I use 5 quarts in my 4.5 quart Aerostar and Honda, as well as my 4.7 quart BMW.
Alternatively, the odd fractional quarts could always be used for the lawnmowers and other OPE.
