Mixing Redline MTL and MT-90.

is it OK to mix MTL with MT-90?

I want to use 2 qts of MTL with another qt of MT-90.

Is this OK?

It works fine.

The MTL will thin down the 15W50 MT-90.

I am currently using this mix for summer in the manual transmission of the Nissan Frontier.

I generally use the MTL straight for cold winter shifts.

I used straight MT-90 for a while which was a great improvement over the Amsoil which was an improvement over the OEM. However, the bulletin boards for my vehicle (6 spd) had many going to a 50-50 mix of MTL and MT-90 to further reduce cold shift harshness. So, about two months ago I changed out the transfer case and transmission gear oil to the 50-50 mix. It now shifts even smoother in the cold shift time period (first 5-10 miles) and just as well when hot.

As an FYI, I just installed a 50/50 mix of Redline MTL and MT-90 (for summer) in the Nissan Frontier's 5-speed and noticed glass-smooth shifting like never before.

I expect to see a drop in wear metals as well.

I will have a used oil analysis on the MTL here in about three weeks.

I have RL 75W90NS GL5 in my Outback manual trans but I feel it's maybe to 'slippery'. What could I blend with that in order for the synchro's to have more 'bite' say? Tks...s

I can almost guarantee that adding about 30% MTL will result in more bite.

Thanks MolaKule. Even though Sube spec GL5 adding GL4 is OK? I thought GL4 had lower load capabilities in the bearings?

I believe the MTL is speced about GL4 and is an equivalent SAE 5W30. With about 25-30% MTL, you thin the visosity somewhat, but there should still be enough GL5 additve package for protection.

The question now is, do you really want to thin the 75W90NS and reduce the oil film somewhat?

I would opt for the thicker oil film unless I was racing and needed the heavier bite. I.E., If this is a daily driver, stay with the 75W90NS GL5.

OK. it just slips into gear a little too easily 'beating the syncro's' occasionally and I don't like the crunch. Beter when hot though.
