I didn't find anything that pointed out that they were a significant problem in my research. The V6's have a 6spd conventional auto trans. The V6 is a bit of an oddity with a timing belt and a premium recommendation, but it seemed quite zippy compared to my 06 CRV when run on regular.

Mitsu uses the Jatco CVT's. Personally I dislike them - alot. not because of the driving experience, I can get used to that. Our Sentra has been in the shop 4X due to the CVT: extreme judder, and squealing. the Rogue was just jettisoned because the CVT started to squeal. of course, someone else on here will say that got a million miles out of theirs with no problems. my experience has been poor.

two months ago we went CUV shopping and looked at the Outlander. we found that the seats were horrible; reminded us of stadium seats. and given their market position, they were not discounting appropriately: the dealer was only taking $800 off and an additional $1000 rebate. The best product, in our opinion, was the Subaru.

CVT's are a crap shoot with out of warranty repair-replacements rivaling the cost of an engine, not to mention their doggy feeling!!! WHY take a chance unless you pony up $$$ for a FULL extended warranty!!

If you don't need seating for 5 +2 kids and AWD and 30mpg, there are better vehicles around, but I think used they are a decent deal if you need its capabilities and can live with its limitations. I was tempted to go after a low mileage 4 cyl and drive it like a 10 year old beater from day one, go off roading to its capabilities, tow a bit over its rating, etc.
I think the AWD is actually one of the more reliable systems, as I didn't find any rear drive PTO issues like on some others, and they've had CVT's almost as long as Nissan so I think they've had a while to get them decently reliable.
They do come with 100k mile drivetrain warranty if you buy new, so maybe look for a left over 2017 or 2018 and see how low you can get them to go?

Change the fluid every year or so. Valvoline and Castrol make great CVT fluid at a fair price. You can often find the Castrol CVT for $5/qt, but it's not on sale right now.

Ernied, I have owned two Mitsubishi vehicles in my lifetime and they were both excellent. However, that was many years ago. Mitsu dealers have been closing up here in the US. This lack of dealers nearby made me shop elsewhere for my last vehicle.

Outlanders are a good value buy right now and maybe there is a reason for that. I would consider other makes like Mazda, Subaru, etc. It's a real shame. I had hoped the Renault-Nissan buyout would have done the opposite of what I have seen. It's almost like Mitsu has given up on the US.

Actually, Mitsubishi is strong everywhere else. The US is their weakest market despite being one of the largest in the world.

I forgot about Hyundai and Kia. Good choice.

I have two. Zero problems.
They get used hard and my local dealer has been stellar on a few very minor recalls.
Wipers and parking brake.
Funny. They have far higher resale value than my Ford which is two years newer.

Yo, Zee09, How many miles were on the ones you resold? Just asking.

My friends are on their third Outlander. The current one being an 2015 Outlander Sport with the V-6. So it's a 6 speed auto?

I changed the CVT fluid on the 2011 (their first-sold to a mutual friend) at something like 120K and it was the color of dark maple syrup.

It was shifting well then and I got into a fight with my friend so I don't know if they still have it now.

At the previous company I worked at a colleague of mine had an Outlander with the CVT and he had 0 issues with it. I think he had about 160,000km (100K miles) on it.
