My mother-in-law's 2002 Civic EX Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) recently came on. She can't remember if it was before or after she filled with gas at a local Speedway. Also, I had removed, inspected, and reinstalled the engine air filter this past week, using my shop-vac (on the dirty side) to suck off some leaf debris, etc.

She says she tightened the gas cap after it came on, but the light hasn't gone away after a few trips. I just checked the cap and it seemed to be one tight, but for good measure I removed it and put it back on, letting it click 3 times exactly as instructed.

We'll see if it goes off, but if not, any suggestions on what to check? Maybe wait for the gas to run down to a half tank or less and fill with some Shell or Mobil? Replace the gas cap with a new one?

If was an untightened gas cap, sometimes it does take a while to go away. Not sure what you mean by a "few trips". I'd give it close to at least a tank of gas, or ~200 miles.

Also, only way to get a better idea is to put an OBD II scanner on it. fwiw, still have the original gas cap on an 01 Civic EX.

As long as it's running well, you'll be ok for a while.

I seriously doubt it's the gas though.

Codes are needed - there are way too many possibilities to even guess right now. Get Advance or AutoZone to scan it for free, or you can pick up a cheap ODB II scanner (there are even Bluetooth scanners that can work with an Android phone or iPhone).

Replacing the gas cap is just a guess. It is extremely unlikely that the gas itself is causing the problem, especially if the car seems to be running OK.

Also it would be helpful to know how many miles are on the car.

Thanks for all the input guys! The car has 86K miles on it. I'll probably do as suggested and take it up to the nearby AutoZone and have them scan it.

I'd like to get a Bluetooth scanner and app for my iPod Touch, but in this thread it doesn't sound like there are any good, reasonably priced apps for iOS.

OP Update: After a few days of driving around, the MIL light went off. So there's either a sensor on the fritz, or the gas cap wasn't sealed properly or has an aged seal/gasket.

Any idea if I get it scanned now if it'll show the code that was thrown, or now that the light is off, has the code cleared itself?

The code should still be saved.
