I hesitantly say this, but I have not used internet explorer since dialup when I was 9 years old. I am pretty impressed with Edge.

I'm not sure what mechanism Windows would have to close all of your Firefox tabs and replace them with something else. I own two Windows 10 machines, and have never seen (nor heard of) anything like that. I use neither IE nor Edge, but use Chrome and Firefox constantly throughout the day.

In my experience, Windows' biggest issue is the Windows Update service seems to be fragile. I have to use the troubleshooter to repair it every so often. But, I've used OS X from 10.3 through 10.8 and a few flavors of Linux, and both presented more drawbacks than advantages for our family, compared with Windows, so we (mostly happily) still use Windows.

(Frankly, I'd like to move the whole lot over to Chromebooks or Chromeboxes, myself.)

It hijacked your default browser setting. Did you turn off the computer and reboot in the morning?

This is funny. So Microsoft is rotten and scummy, in contrast to Apple who is delightful and virtuous? I do personally love Apple's Chinese-sweatshop built products and wonderful privacy features such as default, insecure cloud backups of personal photos and videos from your iPhone

The fragility of updates is not limited to Windows. My iPad was bricked once with the OS update. I've also had a couple of apps fail to update and had to be removed.

Good point and, of course, true. I've found no perfect operating system...computer, tablet, phone, etc. Just ones that fit certain people better than others.

The EULA people don't read gives MS administrative rights to your machine and allows modifications to software without specifically prompting you about it. They can (and do) add and remove software @ will.

If the system connects to a remote MS server, they basically can 'do whatever they want'

I would guess it automatically rebooted to install updates in the middle of the night. I haven't had any issues with windows 10 so far on any of the pcs I used it on.

Yes, and now that I'm on dual boot so I can play some of my legacy games after my power company fried the old PC, I just love how they hound you to update to Windows 10. You click no, and it starts the download anyhow. No, [censored] it. I'm playing old games and I'm not interested in anything else that Windows has to offer.

I also had a problem with my Win7 that showed an update ready to install when shutting down but it failed every time and I could not tell what the update was. This tool fixed that.

Readiness tool:

64 bit version Microsoft’s “System Readiness tool” https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=20858

32 bit version. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3132

I have set the updates to 'Never' and added a calendar event for the 2nd Tuesday of each month to manually look for updates on the Windows Update site.

Your prior session should still be recoverable through the History menu; perhaps there'll be something like a "Restore Previous Session" entry there?

I think Firefox began introducing ads to the Home and/ or New Tab page(s) a while back - I use ad and script blockers and so that has never happened on my system. I read recently that Mozilla is abandoning the ads; but that ad may *not* have been Microsoft directly altering your browser, but rather Mozilla selling them ad space in your browsing experience!

The Restore previous session option was greyed out in the History menu. Along with recently closed tabs and windows.
