So we just had a "new" car join the family fleet. It's a 2006 Miata with 68k miles on it. No service history, but seeing the shape that the previous owners kept it in, I don't think they would skimp on oil changes.

It has a pretty high redline. It will be driven 10 suburbia miles to and from work each day with occasional highway trips. I'm estimating it will have around 8k-10k miles put on it a year.

The oil cap says 5w-20, but I have Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 at home. Should I stick with the 20 weight or will it not make much difference with the 30? And should I do synthetic every 5k or dino every 3k? I'm not familiar with these engines.

Someone on miata.net said a FL910 oil filter fits so I got one already.

We don't really have a winter. We have hot, warm, and cool.

What else is good in addition to the yellow bottle these days? I haven't been keeping up with this section of the forum in a long time.

If you have some Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, I'd go ahead and use it.
Below freezing overnight temperatures happen in parts of Florida in winter, but not for weeks at a time.
If you want to splurge on synthetic and change it every 5-6K, why not?
Also, register this car on the appropriate website (Google either Quaker State or Pennzoil engine warranty) and score some nearly FAR Ultra or Quaker State Ultimate Durability.
Nice little car that should serve you well for years to come.
Miatas seem to be durable and reliable, as well as economical in their fuel consumption.

I guess we like to think of it in a better light and make it less miserable, but oppressive is a pretty good way of describing May to October.

I just bought an 06 Miata with 22k miles. Today changed the oil to Amsoil XL in 5w20 and a WIX filter. I also have a 07 mazda 3 with the 2.3 That calls for 5w20. I've used 5w30 in that many times.
Both are on a 5w20 diet right now.

I'd been looking for one for quite some time. This one popped up and I snagged it the first day on the lot. Its the Grand touring with everything. Copper red, tan top and that orange/brown leather. LOVE IT!
