Well I made my return trip from Vegas back to No.Va. and did a short detour into the suburbs around Dallas. Reason? Fish fry! Yep, invited back to Odis and Jan's for a good ole, honest to gosh, Texas fish fry. As I approached Chateau Beaver, I noticed the motor yacht docked in the side yard. A telltale sign of water dripping from the trailer told me of it's recent foray into nearby Lewisville Lake. These fish were NOT coming from Safeway
. Odis had bowls full of Crappie and Perch caught that morning, filleted and soaking for most of the day, now ready for the fryer.
Out on the back porch for some fresh made ice tea and to meet another invited (?) guest, Terry Dyson. He claims to have made the trip out to meet me but I really know he was there for the fish
. It was at this point I realized which car out front was his. A few years old American with interesting OEM paint. Backseat full of parking tickets and subpeonas, picture of Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out on the visor and a lab coat in the back. At least I think it was a lab coat. Appeared to have once had buckles in the back and straps on the sleeves, but these were either ripped or chewed off. Hmmmm. The clincher was actually the bumper sticker that read: The line between brilliance and lunacy is extremely thin. How appropriate
.
Anyway, time for fish. There was some question as to whether Odis would be using either LC20 or FP60 in the fryer. Well he must have been reading the posts and wants to keep that under wraps too. I will say this, the liquid in the Wesson bottle LOOKED like LC, but then again, who knows. I do know that the fish came out awesome. Jeff and Luke from LCD must have smelled it cooking because they showed up right as the fish were coming out. Ate til I was fat (didn't take long, have a head start
) and happy. Drank lots of tea and had good conversation. Jeff and Luke brought some new brochures that look great and the new logo is very nice. I won't steal their thunder, but look for some changes (for the better of course) in packaging and labeling. Especially for those who need/want smaller sizes and easier dispensing. I can say that Jeff and Luke have things well in hand and are doing the company very well. Odis and Jan can rest easy and take a much deserved break. Something to ponder if sales slow down, enclose some fish batter mix and a gallon of ice tea with each purchase. A definate deal maker!
Time to hit the road, really didn't want to go. The hospitality was superb, classic Texas style. Terry said we could follow him out to Greenville where we would see if the light really WAS on at Motel 6. Almost didn't make it. Not used to typical Dallas traffic, plus my father-in-law was driving. Didn't help that Terry was practicing for the Indy 500 too
. Says he was just keeping up with traffic, yeah right
. He was gracious enough to invite us over to his place to stay the night but I had to decline. With a house full of women, I didn't want to end up like one of those farmer's daughter/traveling saleman jokes
. I'm ready for my Dutch haircut now
.
I had a great time and once again a super vist with Odis and Jan. Meeting Terry was a bonus and was glad to put a face on the internet person. Texas sure is lucky to have these fine folks living there. I'm sure if you looked up "swell people" in the dictionary, you'd see their pictures there. Thanks for having me over y'all.
BTW, if I ever find myself without a place to live, I'm moving into one of those new Texas rest areas. My Gawd! Those places are huge!
