Who makes Mercury oil? I have heard it is Citgo. Is there anything special about this oil? It is "specially formulated" for Mercury engines. What makes a merc different from a PCM, Indmar, ect?
John, my brother has a Stingray with the 3.0 Mercruiser in it. We have been using Delo 15w40 instead of the 25W-40 Mercury oil because it costs half as much. Look in your owners manual, they should list some alternative viscosities. -Joe
On the labels of that 25/40 oil it says something to the effect that it is a unique oil in that it uses no VI improvers to break down.
I am curious how this is formulated.
There was a local Oil Company with a brand name of Mystic but I forget the actual Company name, now I see it is owned by Citgo in Tulsa Oklahoma.I did not know Citgo was in Oklahoma? I guess they are now!
Mercury Marine has a large engine plant in Oklahoma, might be why the oil is used?I think the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 engine was produced there, could be wrong. Who knows these days,,never ever suspected Texaco Havoline to be no longer. Next thing we will see might be Shelvoline
Mystic Oil was owned and made by CATO Oil Company. Citgo purchased them about six years ago right after they moved their corporate offices to Tulsa. I do know that Citgo makes the Mercury Quick Silver 2-cycle oil and I would assume they make the oil for the inboards also.
The Corvette ZR1 engine was produced in Mercury Marines head speed production plant in Fond du Lac Wisconsin where their corporate office is located. A very interesting plant to go through.
Actually if you want to put a spin on oil company names, it would be Shellzoil and maybe Exxon/Mobilvoline.

The Corvette motor was manu in 1991 in Oklahoma at the Mercury plant in Stillwater. Also Mercruiser oil is a 25w-40 oil with no VI in it and has beefed up the corrosion inhibitors.
