Mercedes M104 engine

Hi everyone, i was wondering if anyone here had or still has a Mercedes with the M104 straight 6 in it and if you had to deal with the headgasket issue and when? Talking to people around me who drove one for a long time, the issue seems to be blown out of proportion. Did you have any issue with other things like chains, tensioner, guide etc? Also, did you notice any difference between various oil types/grades in yours? Thanks!

That's a pretty old car for a Mercedes. I have never seen one at work. Either they all got scrapped or the owners fix them their selves.

I had a 98 S320 with the M104 with 280k miles before someone hit it while it was parked and totaled it. I never did the head gasket or chain/guides. It was a very clean smooth engine. Oil changed every 5k. I bought it with 120k miles though so I'm unsure if anything was done prior. That car was an absolute tank.
