I'm seriously looking at a '95 Mercedes 606 diesel with 200K on the clock. The owner is a mechanical engineer who seems to know what he's doing, but I'm not sold on his oil change regimen.

He runs Amsoil (forgot to ask what weight). Changes the filter at 6000, oil at 12000.

What do you think?

Some of the newer diesel vehicals can do that easily ...The Volkwagon TDI comes to mind 10,000 miles changes recommended by the factory ..and I have seen many used oil anaysis that show the oil holds up the the change interval quite well http://www.tdiclub.com/ this is were I learned of this forum many years ago

With my OM 616 turbo, I keep a 7000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first practice and use either Delo 400 or Delvac Super/MX, have been quite successful with this, the engine internals are as clean today as they were when new, I have put 110,000 hard driven miles in 50c temps as well as -15c temps.

we have a first model year w210 (96 e300D). 7500 miles on Mobil 1 Truck and SUV has excellent wear numbers, low soot loading and still has a high TBN. With the cartridge filters, you dont loose a whole lot changing it, but Im sure some make-up oil is necessary. It should be fine at 12k, so long as your soot is les sthan 2%, daimler engineers found long ago that wear rates are not very much effected at all. Just odnt go over 2% soot loading.

In my OM617.952, 5000 mile OCIs were fine, way under the soot loading, but Fe levels were starting to go up (typical for this engine though).

I wouldnt worry about it, and if you are that worried, do 5000 mile filter changes and 10k mile OCIs with synthetic.
