Got to talking with a lady who owns a Mercedes C230 "Kompressor" (Supercharger), 4cyl. In our conversation, it came out that she "must take the car to the Mercedes dealer for an oil change" as it takes special oil that only a dealer can do or it will negate her warranty. She also said that it costs her over $300.00 for each oil change.

I told her that although I can't afford to maintain German cars, (all of them, not just Mercedes), her dealer is handing her a line and is stealing her money.

You mean you didn't offer to change her oil for $200........dumkoff!!!

Why would one spend $31K for that junk when one can get top of the line G35/IS350 for little over that price?

Its their choice & they live by their choices, #@$%! fools to own German vehicles. I have a colleague who owns a BMW 325i which is sitting in his garage with some problem, but then he is so haughty that he owns a German vehicle, its like laughing at these fools.!!!

also certain years of Mercedes dont have dipsticks. they have a tube for them, but theres just a cap on it. i bought a universal mercedes dipstick because they rendomly come in and its the only way to check the level on them.

I don't believe I'm a fool to buy BMW

They last long, can take a beating that would make most cars walk away with their tail between their legs, strong marks in safety due to testing for Autobahn, and most importantly the driving factor. Granted my car is far from stock.

For my needs, it has to be BMW or Porsche...almost everything else (minus exotics and various sport cars) are a bore to drive IMO.

People should have a grasp of the entire situation before shouting out scam. $300 isn't an unfair price to pay for a synthetic oil change, fleece filter, inspection, and replacement of an in-cabin microfilter, which I believe is what a Service A entails on a MB.

"German cars are designed and built for top speed on the autobahn and to be serviced by specially-trained technicians using special tools in specially-equipped shops. Japanese cars are designed and built to idle comfortably in traffic jams and can be worked on by anyone, anywhere, using common hand tools" quote from Dan Barnes.

that is why I own one of each. neither is one of those Japanese Buicks made by Nissan (aka Maxima)

Hey, those Maximas are pretty nice cruisers. They should sell them to cops.

I gotta agree on the durability issue. My old 320i was a tank of the first order. The only reason I got rid of it was b/c a silly girlfriend didn't like it. Good thing I married her and she's a doctor now or she'd be in trouble.

Ctrcbob,

What year is the C230K? I'm not sure, but I think they stopped making that model in 2000 or so. In which case there probably wouldn't be any warranty left to worry about. Or is she talking about the transmission fluid/filter change? The fluid for the 722.6 transmission is pricey.

A synthetic change, 6 qts., with fleece filter and replacement of the cabin filter can be done for a lot less than $300. DIY inspection (or perhaps you could do it for her): free.

As for the person who commented that he had a '98 or '96 and that it had no power: Which one was it? The Kompressor model hadn't come out in '96, so it would have been a C220 or C230 -- only 148 hp, normally aspirated. But the '98 could have been the supercharged model -- something close to 200 hp. Very respectable for a 4-cylinder.
