That's because our military hasn't been able to fight in a conflict since WWII without having their hands tied behind their backs...

+1 It's a darn shame too!

Some of you are going to think that i have made all of this up but unfortunatley its true.

I dont think that they are stupid enough to attack Finland.
I think that they will take out Sweden first since we have almost no defences anymore...
Last easter russian fighterjets were flying in our airspace and we did not send up any of our planes as a warning and to escort them out, the only ones that reacted was Denmark and Estonia and they sent up some of their jets to find out what they were doing here.
THey have done it a few more times since then and most of the time its the other countrys jets that goes up before ours...

The week after that the air force put out 2 (thats right TWO) JAS 39 at the island of gotland but they were unarmed and the nearest pilot was 200kms away from the planes....
The person that was stationed to guard the planes were not trained to fly them....
We could just have painted them on the ground insted since noone was there to fly them if it was needed and even if there was someone that could they were unarmed, unless the pilot was planning on going kamikaze they are useless.

A few weeks ago a russian militaryplane almost made a passengeraircraft crash during takeoff because the russians were flying with their transponders off and no one saw them untill it was almost to late, yes they were in our airspace again but yet again the airforce didnt care.
They have also had excercises that was training them to attack Sweden.

The defence minister said 3-4 months ago that if any country decided to invade us we wouldnt last even a week.

We dont even have anti aircraft guns anymore...
The vehicles sit still for so long that if the **** hits the fan most of them are going to break down within 3 days..

Another scary number is that with the army, navy and airforce togheter we only have about 40,000 soldiers. In the 50,s we had almost 800,000...
Also a few years ago it was mandatory to go to basic training when you were 18 and passed the tests. Now its optional and almost no one goes to it...

When those that are in basic traing now are out and have war trainings in the field they dont even get blank ammo to load their guns they have to yell out "bang" when they shoot at someone...
Thats how little funding the military here gets.

This is what happens when you get a government that just dont care.

I would not anticipate Russia invading Finland. The Finnish may only number 5 million (smaller than Virginia, about the size of Colorado) but have a history of fiercely resisting invasion (The Winter War, 1940) and would reasonably expect their NATO neighbors to support them this time.

This is a show of force.

When the Russian economy is bad, its people are easily distracted by displays of their military's might. Putin has been leveraging this distraction a lot lately....

This is bang-on in my estimation. Gets everybody looking the other way while the emperor has no clothes on.

John.

DFM is cheap right now, the troops were getting paid anyway. They can head up there, why not?

I have a DoD mission to accomplish and this will not cause me to lose sleep.

The cold war never really ended. Just more sabre rattling to mask the economy problems. No one is going bomb anyone. Business as usual. Nothing see here.

Some of you folks aren't considering the military/political/economic response the entire west would direct at Russia should they ever do something so foolish as to invade Finland (let alone Sweden...that would mean a world war conflict to say the least...and a basic destruction of Russia).

Needing a port is one thing...but risking everything to get one? Not going to happen...and if they tried...the Russians would be defeated.

Putin knows that.

Sadly true. When "released" our guys do quite well, and we have the economic might to sustain something. Russia is weak in the knees and could never sustain a conventional anything against us.

Let's just hope no one does something stupid...

Exactly

Sabre rattling: History should show us about sabre rattling and the Germans of the WW2 era. Many were asleep at the wheel. Yes it was a different time, but sabre rattling is still rattling.....and the result of the late 30s lead us into terrible mess in Europe.

There are so many holes in the story that you could drive a truck through...and you need not know anything about radars or ECM.

How did the Russians know what the displays inside the ship looked like? How did the Russians know that the US Sailors were "demoralized"? What's the source of the claim? The USS Donald Cook didn't violate the Montreaux Convention as the article claims, that's why we sent an Aegis destroyer and not an Aegis cruiser (the Montreaux Convention limits warships by tonnage and gun size...clearly, gun size no longer matters...). The description of the Cook is ridiculous as well...it mentions the "Tomahawk" missiles and then claims that the missiles were disabled...except that the missiles that Aegis supports and shoots against aircraft are SM-2, and the Tomahawks are independant of the Aegis weapon system... Finally, how would the Russians know that 27 sailors resigned? First, sailors can't resign, they have an enlistment. Officers can resign, but 27 would be the entire complement of officers...that part is just so laughable that I am surprised anyone would print it.

The SU-24 has good ECM capabilities. But not that good.

This claim is patently false.
