Meanwhile, Russia has stationed 800 servicemen from its Northern Fleet in Alakurtti - just within 50 kilometres from the Finnish border - with the rest of the fleet to be deployed soon according to announcement made by Commanding Admiral Vladimir Korolev on Jan 13. Russia's Northern Fleet in full force consists of approximately 3,000 ground troops, 39 war ships and 45 submarines, he said.

While the USA is bogged down in the Middle East , spiraling debt, stupid politics, and the on going Kim Kardashian crowd,,,,,Russia starts flexing some muscle, well at least old Putin is not on the golf course or hiding out in Hawaii.....nothing like a little skirmish to get us excited.............

NATO Readies Forces On Short Notice As Russia Stations 3000 Ground Forces, 39 Ships, 45 Submarines - International Business Times

Amazing if you could take over a country with 3,000 troops. Europeans need to defend themselves a little better in a collective effort.

This is an almost hopeless situation we are in here, all i can say is the American people got what they ordered and now the chickens have really come home to roost.
Unfortunately the rest of the poor buggers have to live with the consequences.
Thats all i can say without breaking the rules.

Norway is part of NATO. Finland and Sweden are not.

The Russians would love to have a port on the Baltic again, since they lost Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from the Soviet Union.

I would not anticipate Russia invading Finland. The Finnish may only number 5 million (smaller than Virginia, about the size of Colorado) but have a history of fiercely resisting invasion (The Winter War, 1940) and would reasonably expect their NATO neighbors to support them this time.

This is a show of force.

When the Russian economy is bad, its people are easily distracted by displays of their military's might. Putin has been leveraging this distraction a lot lately....

They still have Kaliningrad don't they?, although I guess its not an ideal military situation.
Anyways, I can't see a situation why Russia would do more than sabre rattling with Finland, just for PR purposes at home.

That's a problem for Europe not the US. We should have brought the rest of our troops home from Europe 10 years ago. Let the rich Europeans deal with Russia. Maybe they would have thought twice before meddling in Ukraine.

Russia....LOL....Putin will do anything to deflect the economic disaster he has brought to the Russian people. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets disappeared by his own folks and a new more "business friendly" leader suddenly appears.

Russia is a joke.

I agree. Finland would lay waste to scores of Russian soldiers and Putin would have to be a world class idiot to invade. That is nothing like invading Georgia or Ukraine.

The president could put a stop to all the nonsense with a simple phone call to Putin if he in fact had a spine. Do you think Putin would dare invade Ukraine or station troops on the border of Finland if Ronald Reagan was still president? Putin knows he has a second rate army with second rate equipment and low troop morale.

He's doing it because it worked in Crimea.
Took over eastern Ukraine.
The russian trained Ukraine (russian) rebels shot down an airliner..only response was stiffer sanctions.
His agenda of rebuilding the soviet union is well afoot.

Nothing unusual, why surprised? US warships sailing around the world all the time. Russia is sailing on its borders is a problem?

Ah, but it is a problem for the U.S. We are the world's police and have to be in everybody's business. We have to be Superman and try to save everybody.

Not too many care as long as there is TV and sports the world is fine. The U.S. military has proven itself a laughing stock by its mid east performance. " It a the management fault."

Works for the dolts in the U.S.A as well.

Putin has been posturing wherever he thinks he can get away with it. He has [censored] near bankrupted Russia, so he is becoming a paper tiger. If the price of oil stays where it is for a year, the Russkie bear will be a squirrel.

No way...no how...will Putin invade Finland. He's just posturing and attempting to create an aura of power (like the old days...except not as dangerous, perhaps).

You've got to stop and think....if Russia invaded Finland, what would happen? It would be a disaster for Russia in every sense.

While in the meantime, our country is going down the commode....

That's because our military hasn't been able to fight in a conflict since WWII without having their hands tied behind their backs...

I agree with that grampi. Heck, I seem to agree with you a lot.

Maybe the current administration was watching sports when all of those world leaders walked arm-in-arm in Paris.
