Seriously, that's the analogy someone threw at me once. Apparently melting pot implies that newbies have to give up what makes them, them, and meld into the whole, while being a salad ingredient allows everyone to stay themselves while adding to the salad.
My response to the person who explained that to me: great, but it's very easy to pick the croutons off of my salad if I don't like them...it's a lot harder to take the gouda cheese out of the fondue once it's melted in. Funny thing, the subject changed quickly after that...
