My cousin has just bought an '05 Dodge Sprinter 2500 118in WB 8-pass van. He wanted to use the best hdeo syn for his new baby...also inquired if Delvac 1 would be compatible to the common rail 2.7 I-5 Mercedes Benz turbo diesel...any suggestions Sprinter owners?

This thing is huge!..and a great value I think for a spacious $30k Mercedes Benz oil burner(compare that to a near $50k E Class CDI). Heck, even the less roomy near $60k V10 TDI Touareg(discontinued) can't touch that price..

The Mobil Delvac 1 would be an excellent choice for this vehicle. So would the Amsoil Diesel 15W40. Both excellent oils.

My wife wants one of these. I told her to build me a garage big enough to put it in and she could have one. I still don't see that new garage.

Our Sprinter at work gets Mobil-1 0-40 packaged in a Mopar box from the Dodge dealer. Easiest way for our company to prove warranty to the dealer. Zero problems on our cargo van.

I've been using M1 0w-40 ($5 qt) for the past 50K miles on mine. I decided to switch to Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w-40 ($3 qt) for my next change. I'll be changing it today or next saturday to the new oil.

I'm not worried about the warranty because I blew by that within the first 16 months!

I don't know if I should mention this, but FRAM now makes air and oil filters for the Sprinter. I ordered one of each to test them out. I'll let you know the quality of them when I get them.

Last time I checked I was getting 21.9 mpg. This was with mostly city driving. It's a little higher with highway driving.

Thank guys. Glad to hear that there are Sprinter owners here in Bitog..so how is the overall ownership experience with this Benz? My couz only had his for only a week...

I could see myself owning one of these.

The size reminds me of one of those big euro Unimog trucks.

vwoom,
Here is an exert from a previous thread of mine. Someone else asked me the same questions. Don't let it scare you!

jtantare,

I've had my Sprinter for 1.5 years now and I've put on 50K miles so far. I have mixed feelings about this van. The one we bought was the middle length, extended roof model. The short version was just too small, and the extended version is way to long for practical purposes. The middle length van is esxactly the same size and length as Ford E-Series.

The Good:
Gas mileage! I get 22mpg with city driving, a little more with highway driving.
My van also has the oil computer, anti-lock brakes, and acceleration slip control (I should put this in the bad column.)
I love the multi-postion seats. They are sort of like the expensive trucker seats that adjust every which way. The 2004+ models added more cushion, so go for one of those.
Acceleration is more than adequate for city driving. Don't be expecting to drag race though. Highway driving at 80mph+ is typical Mercedes, smooth!
The interior height is 6ft. I can stand inside and just brush the hairs on my head.
10K mile OCI, more even if you have an oil computer. Transmission is sealed and is only serviced once at 80K miles, then never again.
Controls are nicely laid out. Steering column is in a fixed "trucker" position. I love it, others don't.
Gear shift is in the center dash panel. It's the typical Mercedes gear shift with the soft touch shifting. Just tap it left or right to manualy change gears.

The Bad:
License plate and hardware fell off.
EGR valve leaked oil all over engine.
Leaf spring cushion fell off suspension causing lots of rattles.
Valve stems are all bad. In fact there is a recall on them. Gave me two flat tires.
Power locks don't work properly now. I have to press it twice while it locks and unlocks itself FIVE times.
Dash lights where the climate control functions are go out from time to time. I just slap it to turn them back on.
I'm now having a dangerous problem of passing and/or hard accelerations. Whenever I try to pass a vehicle or merge onto the Interstate, the engine will suddenly lose total power. Then it will accelerate again, then lose total power again. It will do this until I let up on the accelerator. Five or six times at least. This is by far the most troublesome issue.
I also can't find anayone to work on it. I have to do it myself. The dodge dealership in town won't touch it; neither will the Mercedes dealership. I have to take it to Portland,OR (110 miles) to have it worked on.
And finally, it's a bit more expensive. This version cost my company $34,000. A ford E350 should only cost you $25,000.
Oh I forgot, the rear door latch broke. It still closes, just not as easily.
Oh I forgot one more. The front grill is hanging on by one plstic screw now. The other one's broke off.

Besides the issues I have had, I still like the van. I truly believe that Mercedes has slipped a bit in quality control, however it is still a sound vehicle that should last a long time.

Hope this helps.

I picked up the FRAM oil filter and FRAM air filter today for the Sprinter. The oil filter was in a tyical FRAM box, however the filter was made in Germany by Mann. I hope I got the spelling right.

The air filter also came in the orange type box, however I am not able to distinguish who made it. It was made in China though.

Anyways, I thought that you Sprinter drivers might find that interesting. Looks like FRAM just outsourced these filters.

Pm, is there a filter model indicated on the Mann filter case. Good thing it was made by Mann(my filter brand of choice)..if it was the plain orange canister I'd stay away from it.

Coming from someone who is used to the German "fare" of ownership, I grew up with VWs to Mercedes & Audis of my old man...and I'm not at all scared nor surprised with the things that may or go wrong in the Sprinter. Typical German vehicle "quirks" the way I see it...

I need a spacious/roomy diesel in the near future..and this Benz would very likely be included on my diesel list.

jmz, you friend should use Delo 15w40 for his ML270D. The 5w30 is too thin for the tropical climate.

My old man in the Philippines runs Delo for his Mercedes M100D passenger van..the "pseudo Dodge Sprinter" of SE Asia. This MBZ van is a rebadged Ssangyong Istana w/ an MBZ designed 250D if I recall the size correctly.

My friend have ML270CDI and use Caltex Havoline Energy 5w30. Is it okay..? The oil have not API certified for diesel engine. CMIIW..

Thanks a lot, vwoom.. I have 1 carton Amsoil AME 15w40. I'd ask him to use this oil.Only a few good diesel oil that available here:Shell Helix Plus Diesel 10w40, Shell Helix Ultra Diesel 10w40, Shell Rimula X 15w40, IGOL Trans 5X 15w40, Caltex Delo CXJ 15w40, Redline 15w40. So it's better to use 40weight instead of 30weight right..?? How about Amsoil HDD 5w30..??

jmz, yes the Amsoil would be a good bet. The HDD 5w30 for our tropical part of the world would be a little thin if you ask me...perhaps on cooler say wetter/rainy months of the year, the HDD 5w30 could be doable.

Personally, any 15w40 would do though I'd always prefer synthetic over the dino based...due in part to the very high sulphur content of diesel fuel in SEA.

Btw, is the common rail 2.7 in the ML the same CDI engine as in the Sprinter?
