Looking to touch up a stone chip for a 2016 Mazda CX-5 in Soul Red color, 41v paint code. Usually I go with OEM for touch up paint but I've been hearing that because it's a tri-level color a single stage doesn't match that well.

What's the advice on this forum for what brand of touch up to buy? Is the OEM version good for this color?

I have a mazda in rhodium white (it is a tri-coat like soul red)and the oem paint stick from Mazda is not even close to matching...I went to a custom auto paint mixer store and they told me you need to get 3 different bottles and they were $26 apiece and they said they would not guarantee a match...they said the Mazda tri coats were really hard to do touch up paint for..I swear that is the only thing I don't like about my CX5 turbo.

I bought an original Mazda touch-up paint pen for my 2015 Mazda6 (also in the original Soul Red) and no, it doesn't match very well. Thanks @Trav for the link.

While I'm going on, we bought this car new and I've been pretty surprised at how fragile it is cosmetically. Never had a single problem with it... never once a check engine light... and yet in 100k miles it has paint chips everywhere and the interior leatherette is starting to fall apart. I do love driving this car but I wish it had held up nicer. I don't think I will bother with the tricoat touch-up paint because there's just so much to touch up.

Hopefully your CX-5 is doing better.

Edit: Also, oddly enough, our previous car was a 2009 Scion tC which was absolutely flawless both cosmetically and mechanically. I see you have one too. Great minds?

interior wise our 23 looks like new. not a scratch or flaw on the inside yet at 47,000 miles. I was worried about the piano black trim both in and out ( the center console and door switch trim inside and the turbo has the piano black wheel well trim, door trim and lower trim) but that all looks like new. paint tho definitely gets little chips easier than my other vehicles. we bought it new end of January 2023 and never has been back to the dealership either. I wish I would have had PPF applied on the hood.

thanks for the link, I'll definitely look into paintscratch.com and possibly a local automotive paint supplier for the two coats. Not sure if they'll have the 2oz bottles..

ya I wondered if that paint would even get close to matching, it's why I was asking. I knew it was a tri-coat but thought I'd "Get close" with the OEM, thanks for the hands-on experience.

Thanks for your hands on experience, too. This car is a friend's but I did help them pick it out, actually I found it for them, used, but new to them. I do most of the maintenance on it. So far most of the rock chips have been on the roof! It's like the aerodynamics of the front end on this CX-5 that lets things end up there. At least there instead of the front end/windshield! I have seen how soft the clearcoat is, compared to Toyota. I used some Meguiars M105 fine cut rubbing compound to remove a scratch on one of the panels. Took maybe 2 tries and it was gone, would've take a lot more buffing on the Scion to do that!

Speaking of great minds, that's awesome! We ended up with similar vehicles in our lives. Yup I still have the 06 tC, been in storage but getting it out now and back on the road. So far it's maintenance stuff (valve cover gasket, rusted brake line, belts, fluids, new tires, axles still look good (rust patina on them) headlights are foggy, new replacements already bought) but after 20 years, it's kind of expected to do that work. I've been very happy of the quality of stuff back in that era. also have to get rid of a little surface rust underneath, doing that with some rust converter/encapsulator, should get me another 15-20 years! I hope! (y)

why did you get rid of your tC?

PPG practically has a monopoly on paints and white tri color is a choice in other brands …

Hah sorry! failed to reply. We sold our tC a few years ago after we had kids, bought the Mazda, and then decided to camp in a trailer instead of tents (for the kiddos when they were young). I drove it a few years but after having an extra car for about 3 years we sold it when we moved and were short on cash. Still regret it, it was very reliable.

hey thanks for the reply and the update. Yeah that's how I feel about my tC, going to just drive it til it's gone, it's now a 20 year old car, and I'm surprised at how little needs to be done, other than the typical surface rust, maintenance at this age, etc. I did have something funny happen, some dealer had my info for the tC and must have sold my info to CarFax. They sent an email and in it Carfax offered me $2k for it, I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. No thanks!
