My first post, I've searched and couldn't find anyone talking about this.

I have a Mazda CX7 with the 2.3l 4cyl turbo engine. It has direct injection, so I'm slightly worried about fuel dilution.

I haven't run any UOA, but I plan to after this winter.

I drive roughly 7500 miles a year and do an oil change in the spring/summer and fall/winter. So roughly 6 months and 3250 miles per oil change. My driving is 95/100% city per oil change. My drive to work is
I'm concerned that due to the turbo/direct injection and very short trips my oil is probably getting destroyed. I run full synthetic even though the mileage between changes is so short. Currently I have PP in the car.

I recently snagged some German Castrol from the Autozone special but I also looked at the Mobil 1 5w40 turbo diesel oil and that looks like it could be pretty good stuff, especially for the high heat summers we have.

Any tips/suggestions?

I would follow the factory recommended weight and stick with PP. People on here have said that PP is a great oil for vehicles with a lot of fuel dilution. Keep up with your current OCI and you'll be set for a long time.

I feed my CX7 Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 & an OEM or Wix oil cartridge. I now have `9,500 miles on mine and will post my used oil analysis when I get it. I plan on 6,000 OCI unless my analysis demonstrates a need to do different. I would try to do a full 10 miles highway run once a week if your daily drives are less than ~ 5 miles on each cold start. Don't be too concerned about fuel dilution as used oil analysis todate have not shown a serious wear issue with up to 2 or 3% fuel in oil. I defiantly would not seriously consider going up in viscosity to a 40wt. Just my opinion gleaned from oil analysis's data and others on this site. Ed

I am running Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 in our Mazda 2.3 (non turbo / non direct injection). The used oil analysis reports look great. This oil has been in vehicle since the 1000 mile mark. My goal is to eventually get to 10,000 mile OCI's, supported by used oil analysis. Private e-mail me if you would like to see a copy of our used oil analysis reports. Philip.

philipsearcy and astraelraen should swap their choices, it's funny the NA guy is running the turbo oil and the turbo guy is running oil suitable for the NA.

astra, one of our guys here (Last Z) has had notably better results with a synthetic 10w30 in the DISI turbo, over 5w30.

Well, I've read that a lot of the newer direct injection motors destroy oil. Also, it seems that a bunch of turbo charged applications fair better on "heavy duty" oils. Which is one reason why I mentioned the 5w40 turbo diesel Mobil 1 oil.

I think my car is driven in pretty "extreme" conditions. As during the summer it is routinely >95F and the winter it is
I have no reason to believe that Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 isn't doing a good job, but we'll see when I get around to the UOA this summer. Since I've read here that the 0w30 German castrol is some of the best synthetic you can buy for most applications and I bought it on sale thats probably what I'll use next oil change. But the 5w40 turbo diesel engine oil still interests me. I'm unsure of the formulation and how oil formulated for a diesel could have possibly negative effects on a gasoline engine. Maybe not the right amounts of certain additives, etc?

I've considered trying to run a conventional oil since the mileage between oil changes is so short. But I just don't see a conventional making it for 6 months under the repeated short trips and temperatures that I take. Maybe I'm just being overly cautious in that regard.

These motors run really rich, and under severe city driving I think the fuel dilution is pretty high. I can actually smell gas in the oil on my dipstick in the several times that I've checked since my last oil change. I tried lighting the dipstick on fire with a lighter but it didn't catch..... I guess thats a good thing :)

I have GC in mine right now and will post a used oil analysis in a couple of months when it gets to 4.5-5K on the oil. I will say that the reving is more free now than when it was first installed, so I suspect shearing from fuel.

FWIW If you are goig to use OTC Syns Id take the Shell Rotella T Syn 5w40 over the M1. Personal choice, but you may find some used oil analysis in other applications that support this.
