Had the chance to play with my Toro snowblower (it's around 12 years old or so). I've started it an let it run a bit to get the oil/gas mixture a chance to flow through to get a ready for it's first snow (only saw action once last winter. But I've noticed a few issues:

1- It runs a bit rough while idling

2- It had a harder time last year throwing heavier snow

Pretty sure #2 will require a new paddle-not sure how I want to go about #1 quite yet. We have a good local place the does a great job fixing these up- have even considered taking it there to let them get it into shape.(I take care of my summer stuff.

I really haven't got the chance to work on this....any suggestions....and would they be simple as a DIY? I've done the basics, but I would like the chance to work on my SB without breaking it!

The fact that it is running, it's not bad. Two strokes don't have alot of tuning. Lot less moving parts, no valves and they aren't picky. Change the spark plug if you desire, they don't much care about gap abd run some Sea Foam through it at the cans recommended dosage and you should be good to go. I am taking for granted it's a two stroke. Fresh fuel, clean air filter, new spark plug. Your tuned up. Really couldn't ask for a more efficient engine.

Changing the paddles on these looks like it's fairly straight forward, plenty of videos out there to help. I just bought my SS and the paddles and scrapper bar kit run about $65 at amazon. Just making sure you get the right kit would be half the battle, the other half would be having a warm place to do it, they say it's easier to do if the rubber is warm.

+1 You snowthrower sounds fine but could use a little TLC. Changing what is mentioned above will help. Also, what is the mix you're using? Perhaps you are running it a bit more rich in oil than speced? That sometimes can cause issues. I switched to trufuel as I dont use my 2 cycles as much and everything is working like a champ. You could also try a piston soak with some seafoam. That might also help. Without pictures or a video it is tough to tell

Didn't think of seafoam...may give that a shot...

And I'll have to see if there is a vid for my Toro to change the paddle....

what model of Toro is it? I have a CCR2450 and I took the carb apart to clean it and replaced the paddles and belt when i bought it (used) 2 years ago. Very easy and I followed youtube video for the carb. I'm sure there are videos on the paddles and belt, too. It's fun to work on your own stuff..good luck!

(I also run tru fuel through it..only use a couple cans a year..run it dry at end of season and it starts on first pull each year.)

What does Seafoam d besides smoke?

SeaFoam is awesome as a fuel stabilizer. Keeping fuel fresh for years, not days or months. It's amazing stuff. I rank it right up there with Marvel Mystery oil. I have had zero problems with stale fuel or carb problems when using SeaFoam to treat the fuel.

Heh heh I moved the Ariens 24" to the front shed this morning. The 6 HP Predator started on the second pull. I use a liberal dose of MMO in the gas and fill the metal tank up to the neck. I also run the carb dry after every use. The Ariens is about 40 yrs old. This will be the 4th season for the Predator. I may change the oil this winter

You could try checking its rpm/speed and adjusting.. should just be a lever you bend away for more rpm.

My spring got weak and mine was idling at 3300~~ and spec is 4000 +-10%

I have the 141cc R-tek.
Some models spec is 3800 +-10% IIRC.

you would need a tach... other than that.. Get good fuel with the proper amount of good oil..
Paddle speed is the major factor in how well they throw unless you have REALLLLY worn out paddles.. and you get paddle speed with engine RPM.

I love my toro.. except for completely refrozen end of driveway snow plow pile it eats snow alive.
I usually take a coal shovel out to break it up abit and its fine.
If it dies going right back to another one.. although the new ones arent 2cycles.

Also had my eye on a 3 year old one for 250$ but the guy craigflaked.

I have a 26" Cub Cadet 2-stage that hasn't been started/used since early 2015. The fuel was treated with SeaFoam, hoping for a smooth start this week. If not, it's on me.

Please report the first start. TIA
