Can you explain further why your brother in law does not like using HDEO in 4 cyl. engines? This interests me since the car in question is a 4 cyl. 1.9L DOHC Saturn that the Rotella T HDEO would be going into.
To answer your first question. Yes, you can use any conventional oil w/A-Rx. Some folks like to use the cheapest conventional oil due to the fact that they're going to dump it in about 1000-1500 miles anyway. These things I've learned here at BITOG.
The second question concerning my Brother-in-Law not using a HDEO(15W40) in little 4cyl engines is because they are a bit low on torque due to small cranks and they seem to be a bit lethargic in exceleration and sometimes lower MPG. This isn't to say that all 4 bangers will seem slower or loose MPG, just the ones that his kids drive. They're slow with 5W20/30! He uses 15W40 HDEO in larger displacement V6's & V8's and notices no difference than using what the Owners Manual calls for(5W30). And he feels that he's getting better protection(no used oil analysis to prove it).
Your Saturn 1.9 DOHC is a torquey little engine(I've driven several modles) so an HDEO will probably do well for you.
These are just oppinions and preferences, nothing scientific.
