I wrote Valvoline and finally got a response. Here is what they said:

"We apologize about the delay on the response to your request. This is information that we had to obtain from our scientist in the product development laboratories. The HTHS for the Synthetic MaxLife 5w30 will be 3.5."

Seems like a high HTHS for a Dexos 1 oil, but that's what they said. If you believe this number and look at published NOACK, etc, it seems like a pretty nice oil for $22.xx / 5 qt at Walmart.

Good to know. That's a lot better than the 3.1 HTHS on the regular Mobil 1...and same as Mobil 1 ESP (3.5)....and better than Mobil 1 High Mileage (3.3). Both are higher sodium oils.

I like Maxlife and I like higher HTHS

If HTHS of MaxLife Full Synthetic 5w30 is 3.5 then 10W30 should be similar or a little higher.

This is good news, I have 2 jugs MaxLife Full Synthetic 10w30, I will use it in my S2000.

Thanks Novadude.

Did you ask them about Maxlife Full Synthetic or the Valvoline Full Synthetic with Maxlife technology? For some reason I think the former was a little thicker and not dexos. Am I right?

I couldn't remember exactly how I worded it, so I went back to the email and looked at my specific question. Here is what I asked:

"What is the HTHS viscosity of Dexos1 Valvoline Full Synthetic with MaxLife Technology 5w30 oil?"

The exact answer they provided is what I posted above, so I assume that they are talking about the current formulation.

The 5w30 has a cSt of 11.0 at 100 degrees C. There is no way it has an HTHS of 3.5. Would be curious to have the experts chime in, but I don't even think that is possible with current technology.

I too find the idea of an ILSAC 5w30 having a HTHS that high, a little difficult.

Maybe someone else can ask the question and see if Valvoline gives a different answer? The question / answer above was cut and paste from the email I received from them, but that doesn't mean they answered it correctly.

Well, that's the problem, and you highlighted it nicely. I suspect they reported the result of the previous, non-ILSAC variety. And, with a customer service person as a go between for a knowledgeable BITOGer and a formulator, you know what can go wrong.

I decided to email them myself to see what answer they might give for the hths
I asked this:
Comments: Could you please provide the HTHS value for the most recent version of the Valvoline Full Synthetic with Maxlife Technology dexos 5w30?

Got this response FWIW:
The High Temperature, High Shear (HTHS) for the Valvoline Full Synthetic with Maxlife Technology 5w30 is 3.5.

Still seems high for a dexos oil though.

We just need to do a group BITOG purchase of some testing equipment so we can test HTHS at will, since we always wonder about that sort of thing.

I wonder how they'd answer a followup question that would require more than a look at a list or a quick call down the hall, though.

Right or wrong, at least they are consistent. LOL

That would be awesome!

We need another member to email them as well for a third data point. One is a number, two is luck, and three is science :-)

I just got a response from them that the 5w30 has a HTHS of 3.0 @150C.
The 10w30 is HTHS 3.1 @150C.

Also, for any VW or Euro car owners, I was told that the Maxlife Synthetic is no longer a similar formula as Synpower 5w30 MST so it shouldn't be run in a VW or other car with Euro approvals. I mention this because a few years ago, Maxlife Synthetic had VW and other euro car approvals. Even when they took it off the bottles, several techs still told me it was Synpower 5w30 MST with additional high mileage additives.

In the current response, the tech told me this is no longer true.
