I have a 99 Chevy Silverado 5.3 4L60E Z71 with around 127,000 miles on it. I've had it for around a year now, but only put about 5,000 miles on it before I left on deployment to Afg and I am not sure when the last time it was changed. As soon as I get home, I am going to change out the filter and pump out the old fluid through the return line so I can get as much new fluid as possible. I am moving also and will be driving from NC to AZ towing a trailer. Since my trans. is originally spec'd for Dex III, is it safe to use the Maxlife or should I go with the Dex VI? The Maxlife says it meets the specs for Dex VI, but not GM approved. What would be best for my transmission?

I would go amsoil ATF in your transmission, put some stabil in the gas, put a fresh oil change in it and go.

You can evacuate all of the old gas if you want, but I have seen cars sitting for over a year that start right up..

I think the Amsoil is a great ATF, Valvoline fully synth DEX VI is an overlooked product I think, doesnt seem to get talked about much here, that I have seen anyway.

I recently used the Valvoline fully synth when I did a 4qt pan drop & filter change on my old 700R4 that was slipping, along with 2 bottles of lubeguard red....so far so good, fingers crossed!

Having said that, at some point i will do a complete fluid change and cost-wise, i will prob use MaxLife, since i see it as being a good product and more affordable for 12 qts.

If you want real longevity from the transmission, fit a cooler if a stock one is not present!!

I appreciate the responses gents. I think I am leaning more towards the Maxlife because of cost, but I think I can get the SuperTech Dex VI for about the same price. Reading on Valvoline's website, it seems that Maxlife would be the better choice for a older transmission and it is a full synthetic.

it's 7ish dollars for a quart of maxlife, and 10ish for Amsoil, the Amsoil, it is a small price difference for the extra protection, performance, and longevity of the Amsoil ATF.

I believe Walmart has the gallons of Maxlife for $15.50. Not to bad a deal. I wish I could get myself to drop $150-160 on Amsoil for a complete flush and fill, but it's just not feasible at this time for me.

The Walmart by me used to carry Maxlife but it does not carry it now. Oh well. LOL...

Anyways, I do not think Amsoil or Mobil 1 is going to perform any better, that most people are going to tell any difference. I do a pan drop usually every 30K or even less in some circumstances.

Wow. 7 bucks a quart for Maxlife ATF? I only end up paying about $2.60/qt., at Advance Auto, with the coupon codes, when I buy it by the gallon.
By the way, I have 4 GM products in my driveway, a 93 P.U., 96 P.U., 99 Blazer w/4.3, and a 08 Silverado. The 08 is spec'd for DEX-VI, and I run the Maxlife ATF in everything. Good stuff. Great price.

Thanks kasedian. You definitely made my decision easier by knowing that Maxlife is serving your '08 Silverado well and without any problems. How did you get more than one coupon code for Advance Auto. Right now all they have is a 20% off any order?

Go online to Advance Auto's site. Put 3 gallons of the Maxlife ATF in your cart. Total should come to $53.97 (3 x $17.99). Then use code A123. That will knock $20 off, bringing the total to $33.97. $33.97 / 12 = $2.83/qt. Add on your tax, and it will be around 3 bucks per quart, or so. Good stuff, great price. Like i said, I use it in ALL my Chevys, and am very happy with it.

I was going to order 3 gallons for my Xterra, but it wont let me choose the ship to home option. I got tired of shopping, so I didnt do anymore research on their site. Do they ship fluids/oils at AAP?

I found the page that says they dont ship oils due to hazmat reasons. Seems like they could be losing a lot of sales, since a lot of companies ship oils via UPS. I ended up buying 3 gallons of Maxlife ATF at Autozone this morning for $15.99 each.

Welcome back Marine!

Cherry Point to Yuma? Just a guess...take it easy on the driving days during your DITY move...trailer driving is more fatiguing. I assume you'll change the oil as well as the trans fluid, just make sure you check the condition of the whole truck, including your tires, before hitting the road too...

I would go Maxlife - good product, synthetic, meets DEX III spec on your truck, and you can afford the volume necessary to do a cooler line flush.

Ooh-Rah!

I have the 4L60e in my '00 Camaro 3800 Auto with similar miles to yours except I got a new transmission about 20,000 miles ago. My vehicle is slipping back and forth quickly b/w 3rd and 4th gear at cruising speeds around 40-45mph. I want to do a complete flush and was thinking about doing using Maxlife b/c of the Advance Auto coupons.

On my Acura I have had overwhelming results using Redline's ATF which is supposed to be compatible with all dino's and syns. I was thinking about doing a 2x3 flush with maxlife and then adding a 2 or 3 qts of Redline D4 or maybe even 2 qts of D4 and 1 qt of Type R (Racing). Any thoughts?

ps I hope I am not hijacking but adding to this ATF discussion on the 4L60e transmission.

I would stick with one or the other.
