When changing the 10w60 in one of my Italian bikes recently, I noticed my stash of Maxima Extra4 was marked “100% Ester ...” and I chuckled knowing that some BITOG’ers get real excited about high ester lubes. While the sump was draining and I was sipping a beer, I checked Maxima’s site and saw Extra4 is replaced by “Extra” and Extra is not advertised as 100% Ester. So do y’all think Extra4 was really 100% Ester or was it just a marketing error in stating such? If the latter, must of been a severe mistake to warrant a new product name. Maybe is used to be 100% ester ... images of both products attached.
EDIT: I see one difference between the two Extra products. Extra4 does not have a JASO approval number but Extra does. Extra also has updatedd API classifications. Maybe that was the change and they also corrected a possibly misleading 100% Ester claim in the process.
