The $400 Taurus is a 1995. We are wondering if the Inspection sticker expires this month, thus putting the onus on US to get it reinspected/(fixed.) Seller put this off until Thursday. So. In the absence of the Subaru.. WOULD it be unwise to get the Taurus, if it has 1. A CEL on 2. Inspection sticker needs new? (Or, is it easily fixable?) Please, comment as to Inspection process, and what is looked for.

There appears to be no rust, 106K miles, and that weird yet innocent hole in the back. This the car from the other thread. And its $400 vs $1600, so. ?

1995 means you don't need to pass any OBD II tests.

Get the seller to have the code read before you buy the car. Many states won't pass a vehicle that has a CEL. If your state is one of these, be very wary.

Make sure the tires are good and not dry rotted, look at the pads and rotors, when you drive it listen/feel for any weird clunks or pops from the suspension. There's a lot that can be wrong on a car that age.

In MA when you buy a car YOU have 7 days to get it inspected. It does not matter if the sticker is current or not. It goes by the plate, which is assigned when YOU register the car.

A CEL is an automatic fail.

Emissions are checked every other year.
The safety inspection checks brakes, wipers, horn, lights, tires, suspension (ball joints), exhaust, excessive rust, glass, etc.

So that IS true that it must be inspected no matter what, its not a if the sticker is current just leave it on state?

There is an inspection place down the block from me on Washington St in Weymouth. I live up the hill from Weymouth Landing.

YOU have to have it inspected, not the previous owner, YOU. No matter what.

The data is entered into the RMV computers with the new tag.

Emissions Tests

The On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) Test All vehicles that are registered in Massachusetts must receive a safety inspection each year. Vehicles listed below must also receive the following types of emissions tests each year:

On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) Test:

Model year 1998 and newer passenger cars, trucks and SUVs

Model year 1998 and newer light-duty diesel vehicles (weighing 8,500 pounds or less)

Model year 2007 and newer medium-duty diesel vehicles (weighing 8,501 to 14,000 pounds)

Model year 2008 and newer medium-duty non-diesel vehicles (weighing 8,501 to 14,000 pounds)

To read this website, you would be in the clear with a CEL, as only 1998 and newer need to pass emissions.

If you register your car and don't get a sticker the RMV chases after you with a polite letter saying your plates will soon be voided. You get to write back saying you're out of state at college or a bunch of other excuses.

There are also rejection stickers, if the previous owner goes in and fails there should be a big "R" on the sticker and a report on what should be fixed. Though someone might know from a "pre-inspection inspection" that a bunch of stuff is going out.
