Just found this: Mann-Hummel buys Affinia Group. Very interesting! I read that Mann-Hummel was the biggest filter manufacturer in the world, but I though Affinia group was pretty big too. However, 16,000 vs 4500 employees, and 3 billion euros vs 900 million euros in sales puts things in perspective.

This quote is also very interesting: "MANN+HUMMEL will lead the Group as a new business unit based in North Carolina." So German Mann-Hummel buys US based Affinia, and will base the new company out of the US? I assume corporate head office functions will remain in Germany.

So will Mann products for European vehicles be re-labelled Wix for North America, or will we see more Mann filters readily available through regular Wix distribution? Interesting times.

This could be interesting. I think they manufacture filters with Purolator as well (If my memory is right). It would be a good partnership.

Less competition isnt a good thing...

Im a fan of Mann filters for Euro vehicles, but...

Will be interesting to see if they do some changes to WIX filters as they did with Purolator ones, like can design, filter media etc.

If they change my NAPA Gold's, they are FIRED!

I do not believe this will be a big deal, there are other German companies running in the U.S. Hella and Continental Tire.

Correct. From Mann's corporate website, their brands are Mann-Hummel, Wix, Filtron, Purolater and Microdyn-Nadir.

Let's hope this cross-pollination makes for incorporating the best of each product, not the cheapest of each product. It does seem that most German corporations have less of a "What's the stock price this quarter" mentality than US based ones due to less reliance on stock options in senior management's compensation packages, which can hopefully lead to longer term thinking. Time will tell.

Can the FTC stop the takeover?

I would gather not. I don't think it would bode them well to get rid of the Mann name in North America for the drivers of German cars who are familiar with it and comfortable with it. They could also cut the Wix application catalog, or at least replace Wix filters for German makes with Mann stuff.

A Wix filter for my old Audi was always close to $10, whereas a German Mann, Mahle, Hengst, Bosch, and so forth was always under $5.

If Mann paid the right people then it will happen.

Let's not forget that we're down to a handful of domestic airlines now, no thanks to the people who are supposed to prevent oligopolies.

The people that are supposed to prevent oligoplies are smart enough to not bite the hand that feeds them.

I suspect Mann has decided that they need to offshore jobs to where there is cheaper labor, which unfortunately means the USA now. Taxes on corporate earnings are a lot lower here too. Besides, Purolator has tons of defective filter media they need to use up! (Just kidding.)

M&H already has offices in Raleigh NC, so no major changes required.

Acquisition now completed as announced in August of last year and discussed HERE. Not much to add to what said there. Time will tell what it means for Wix.
