Mann Filter Quality?

I was on Rock Auto looking for a part and discovered Mann oil filters for both my wife and son's car for under $3 each.
I have never used this brand nor has anyone I know. Are these a good quality filter?

They are good filters. Make sure they aren't old stock.

Depends on the application. For BMW and Mercedes, for example, they are great. But for some other applications, they are just rebranded Purolators (Mann-Hummel acquired Purolator some time back), and are nothing special from what I recall.

Exactly. For the German applications, it's going to be hard to go wrong for the price. For the North American and Japanese applications, well, I wouldn't be going out of my way to get them, to say the least.

In general it is my second choice after Donaldson, but I have cut problem Mann filters

I've also found that their air filters hold about half the dirt as a Donaldson before restricting, with similar efficiency.

This explains why they cost half the price of a Fram orange. Wife has a Sportage, son has a Sentra.

White-can Manns are just American-market Purolator Classics, hence their price. The black ones made in and available in Europe are highly decent.

I don't think you can generalize based on can colour. I have a Mann W917 bought on-line from the US in a white can that is clearly marked "Made in Germany".

There are black ones that are made in the USA. And they are Purolators.

I once bought a fuel filter for my 98 Honda del Sol from MANN. The Price was very high, (30 € IIRC) the label stated "Made in China". Oh yes.... German Quality.

The filter leaked extremly badly, there was a big fuel fountain in the engine bay after starting. Right beside the Battery and main Electric. Good feeling if you sit inside the car and watch this.

After thorughly checking i found out that the filter was bad.
I complained about that to the customer servie of MANN.
The reaction from MANN was rude and they gave me a could shoulder, but at least they confessed that there was a problem: There was a bad batch of fuel filters, now they changed the supplier of the filters.

That´s it. No Sorry or something...

I asked them why they dont recalled the bad fuel filters from the dealers, but i dont get any answer...

Customer care in Germany IS rude sometimes, yes, but that was a new highscore!

So, i never will buy a MANN Filter again, its only MAHLE now for me. All filters from MAHLE that i bought and used where labeld "Made in Austria" and worked well.

I just cut open a Mann ML1002 .. it was OK. Although I'd spend more money and get something better.

Especially if they are coming from the Purolator / Bosch / Mann factory. As others have noted, the German Mann's are very well built. W917 Mann for the Volvo was excellent.
