The article claims that almost half of people diagnosed as being in a vegetative state are wrongly diagnosed. This is frightening if true.

There was an NPR program about vegetative states a few weeks ago. One of the main points was that there is still a lot we don't know about the states of the brain and we cannot judge who is in vegetative state or dead simply because we cannot see evidence for the otherwise.

I'm surprised he's not totally insane. That's virtual solitary confinement for 20+ years. Imagine if he was in chronic acute pain as well.

..but it gives us much to think about.

very frightening.

I wonder, how many people were trapped, and are still trapped like that poor guy.

One of the more memorable music videos from my childhood! I was a Metallica fan back then. I still occasionally listen to everything from Ride the Lightning to The Black Album.

My living will gives me two weeks.

speaking of wills I have it notorized that I want the plug pulled after 7 days.

I am also a metallica fan from anything pre black album and Death Magenetic was not too bad actually if you compare them with St Anger and the 2 loads.

'Johnny Got His Gun' is one of the scariest horror books/movies ever conceived, due to how awful it would be to be trapped in such a state indefinitely. IIRC, the video where the clips from that movie were used, and also the lyrical content, are from the song 'One', not 'Trapped Under Ice'.

"Darkness
Imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live, I cannot die,
trapped in myself, my body my holding cell"

This just goes to show how LITTLE we STILL know about the human brain.

I very much agree.

Correct, it was their song One from And Justice For All. Great song. I bought the book but couldn't really get into it. I'll have to try to read it again sometime.

It's a pretty decent book, nothing spectacular about the man's writing style or ability. The book is more a vehicle for the conveyance of the story than it is about the artfulness of the storytelling. Kind of like The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. It's a book with a purpose and the art of writing is secondary to it's primary purpose, which is being a anti-war novel in the case of Johnny or pro-union in the case of The Jungle. It takes a good story to make a book like these worth reading.

The Metallica song pre-dates that by a couple of decades

Beat me to it! LOL!

To my knowledge, Trapped Under Ice never had a video....

That being said, here's where I was going with that song:

I don't know how to live through this [censored]
Woken up, I'm still locked in this shell
Frozen soul, frozen down to the core
Break the ice, I can't take anymore

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm Trapped Under Ice

Crystallized, as I lay here and rest
Eyes of glass stare directly at death
From deep sleep I have broken away
No one knows, no one hears what I say

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm Trapped Under Ice

Scream from my soul
Fate, mystified
[censored], forever more

Scream from my soul
Fate, mystified
[censored], forever more

No release from my cryonic state
What is this? I've been stricken by fate
Wrapped up tight, cannot move, can't break free
Hand of doom has a tight grip on me

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm Trapped Under Ice

Very similar to "One" in the message it conveys... Without the war-related overtones.
