Mama wants a hatch!

I saw a new Mazda 3 hatch advertised for $18k in the paper. That would be fun to drive. My neighbor has two of them but they are the sedan version.

2 year old 15-16 grand (and less).

Impreza wagon(5 door). Hyundai wagon, Kia Sportage

Note that the Subaru dealer only gacve my wife 11700. for a 2015 Forester in excellent condition minus needing tires (and brake in 10K miles). They had it on the lot in 3 days for 19K+

LOTS of wiggle room on the "right" day.

here is her actual car:

Ouch.
Could have sold it to the OP for $15k!

My top pick would be a Mazda 3. Like, by a mile. No question.

Wouldn't touch the CUVs/SUVs/crossovers unless she really truly needs the height for some reason. Everything else about them can be had comparably or better in other cars.

Impreza wagon might be nice.

Is a Honda Fit too small? They're surprisingly big on the inside.

Lexus CT200h might be another option. Bigger than many of the other options here, and under the posh exterior it's just a good old dependable Toyota. If you're willing to step outside your model year range a bit, you can get them under $20k all day.

If you want comfort & quiet, the C-Max and Buick Encore are your best bets. If fuel economy had been a little higher priority when I was shopping last year, I'd be driving a C-Max Energi (plug-in hybrid) right now, instead of the LaCrosse in my sig.

You took a serious bath on that car. Also for future reference Subaru covers brakes for 3yrs/36k under bumper to bumper warranty so no cost to them to replace.

Thank you,

looks nice.

But:
-first year model
-not even yet available
-market "bugs" work out?
-i thought is going to be over $20k
- kind of long body (probably as long as a minivan)

Thank you

but most of them are in the short hatch form.

i would have taken a look if my car, but this will be a cart-the-kids around car with the occasional 1 kid extra in there.

no minivan territory yet, but something a bit bigger/better seating distribution....

Another option, it's a little older, probably harder to find, and the mileage is on the low end, but maybe a 2014 Acura TSX Sport Wagon?

Thank you

right now all i'm finding is 2011-2012 TSX wagons... and they are in the $19k-20+ and 60k+ miles... i could get a GSW new for around $18.5k-19k + TTL+ registration + taxes (Cook County, wink wink)

I think you are right to get a good sized cargo space. 30-35 cuft is pretty useful and you don't have to plan to carry stuff and almost everything fits.

Thank you Indy,

this is to be the mom car....
so kids + groceries + school stuff and some playdate extra may be the normal.

i will probably get relegated to the mazda5... (which is kind of "punchy" even with the NA engine....)
both back rows folded almost flat and some cargo protector should make it useful for next time we have a house....

P.S.and thank you for all the focus wagon suggestions.... here the '05-'07 are rare.... it seems their owners are holding to them....

Please don't laugh, but i just need a charging port on long drives....
Wife is still on a windows phone....
