Are these filters equivalent in quality, or is one brand considered better ?

Although I typically buy Mahle for my European cars, both are equivalent and good quality.

Both are good. I had a 1985 BMW 318i back in 1980s-1990s and I used both brands until the time I sold the car. No problem. During those times, Mann filters were either made in Germany or Belgium and Mahle were made in Germany.
