My friend's new Dodge Magnum with 10k on it is using a qt of 5W20 every 3K. There is some sort of TSB on it although I don't know what it says. Does anyone know if this a common problem with new 5.7 Hemis? What's the cause? His dealer said all Mopars use oil and not to worry about it.

It is rather a trivial amount to be "worried" about. Sounds like a PCV condition thingie type thing.

I think all reciprocating engines use some oil. So all MOPARS use oil. Ring placement and tension, crankcase ventilation and valve seal materials have a lot to do with it but some oil is getting burned in any engine. 1/3 a quart per 1k is not bad. Perhaps this will train the owner to keep an eye on his oil level and maintain the vehicle properly.
The scariest owners are the ones who assume their new vehicle burns no oil ( the prevalent a new vehicle should burn no oil attitude) and therefore they never check the oil level. Plus an event such as heavy throttle, Towing or pulling long grades could increase consumption even if you haven't observed it in the vehicle before. The lesson is to check the oil level because anything, A mopar, A Honda, A Volvo can use some oil. All engines burn oil. Sometimes it simply is not observable or is countered by other liquids taking up the volume in the oil. But every stroke in each cylinder always leaves a film of oil on the cylinder walls exposed to the Combustion chamber.

I wonder how much oil the average late model car uses? I'd guess it's way less than a qt every 3K.

My friend takes excellent care of his Magnum and does not abuse it. First OC was at 3K (Mobil 1 5W20), next at 8K with Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. Aside from the oil consumption he loves it.

And there are several new Fords that use 1 qt ever 1k miles...
1 qt every 3k is nothing to worry about.

A Magnum 5.7l is on my shortlist for my next car (along with perhaps a project SAAB). I think 5.7l's of HEMI goodness would be enough for me to overlook some consumption....

If it's an automatic, have him get it good and hot, then go to the steepest hill in town, put it in first gear at the top of the hill, and accelerate downhill to about 1000 rpms less than redline, and quickly release the throttle until the speed drops a bit. Reaccelerate and release a few times...never risking over-revving it. See if that helps. It sure won't hurt, and it could suck out a glob of splooge that had been stuck around some rings. If so, maybe the consumption will drop some.

Any one of thesethings could be the reason

  • Hard driving
  • Brand of oil, Volatility*. Try another brand and observe *see below
  • Engine characteristics

  • * We had a '93 F150 at work that was using 1qt every 1500-2000 miles (about 3 weeks of use). The driver was a loyal Pennzoil man. When he transferred out, the truck was reassigned the me and I had them use Havoline like my other company truck. No more oil consumption problems, often less than 1/2 qt per 5,000 mile OCI.

*The oil is boiling off, lighter molecules vaporize and heavier molecules remain

I will say that my 5.7 Hemi was using about a quart between changes (3500-4500 miles) when I was using Pennzoil 5w30. The engine had 2000 to 12,000 miles when I used it...I switched oils and have been using either Schaeffers 5w30 or Redline 5w30 and the consumtion has dropped to zero. It could be that the rings seated and the engine is now broken in. I do heavy towing with this truck and am doing 6000 mile OCI's.

Lol, of course I do...But with a commute of more than 100 miles a day, I don't want to be on Greenpeace's most wanted list.

In my 5.7 it used a qt in the first 4,000 miles. I have has two oil changes since then. In the last 8,000 miles I have not "used" an drop of oil since then. I hope that the qt of oil that I "used" was part of my engine break in.

Exact same oil weight used when switching to Havoline? That's an incredible drop if it's the same - or even the next weight on the totem pole.

I would be upset if my vehicles needed to have oil added between recomended oil changes. This assumes a daily driver that is not street raced or such.

  • Using an oil with the same basestock. Simular add pack. Simular weight and it went to zero.

That's reasnable consumption, although I know almost nothing about this third gen Hemi.
I would Google "Hemi". You'll find some forums. See what kind of oil consumption others are seeing, and that will tell you whether this one is normal.
Consumption varies from nil (typical Honda) to a great deal (big block Chevy), so this engine may well be in its normal range.

Ged I had a street driven 477" Big Block Chevy that made 636 bhp without the 250 bhp shot and it went through 1 Qt of Valvoline 20W-50 every 700-800 mi.
