Magnetic oil drain plug. First change

Purchased my magnetic plug at Baxters for $6.29. I just installed it about 1200 miles ago. Looking forward to seeing results.

The oil filter would have caught some of these metal particles....after they ravaged their way through your oil pump. The sharp edges of the metal shards could have possibly cut through the filter media under velocity and pressure. It is always a good idea to use a magnetic oil drain plug to remove wear metal and to moniter metal wear. Be sure to use a high powered magnet to retain the debris so it does not re-enter the oil flow.


OK, a little less CNN/Fox/MSNBC style hype here. "Ravaged" their way through the oil pump? No. They might cause a slight amount of increased wear, but remember that the oil pump rotors are not being forced together UNDER HIGH LOADING like bearings are. They're just rotating together and squeezing oil- they can tolerate a fair amount of particulate matter going through them, and that's by design. Metal shards "cutting through" filter media??? Where does that notion come from? Filter media is MADE to trap jagged sharp particles! Under velocity and pressure? The filter media is a huge surface area compared to the oil passage feeding it, again BY DESIGN to slow the oil down and minimize the differential pressure across the media.

I agree with your overall premise- a magnetic plug is a good thing. But you greatly, GREATLY, overstate the alleged "hazards" of not using one. And besides, just what percentage of the oil goes close enough to the drain plug for particles to be snatched on each pass through the pan anyway? A small percentage. Statistically speaking, its likely to be after several passes through the pump that a given sub-20-micron particle might get trapped on the magnetic plug anyway. A magnet on the filter is much more likely to snag particles on the first pass through the pump.
 
I think the real premise of the magnetic plug is to catch and retain particles as they settle out after you shut down.

There's no way they can catch much when the engine is in operation.

And a big X2 on the huge enhancement of the hazards!

There is less metal debris on the magnetic oil drain plug since I have started using 2 CT3.2 Filtermags on the oil filter. While I have not cut open a filter, it looks like it is working. If anyone has a desire to cut open a used oil filter (EAO36 Amsoil), I would be delighted to sent one your way.

The answer is no. I put these particles under a microscope and they were very similar in size to graphite, 10um and under. That is not reliably filtered by oil filter. If they were, you would not see them on the magnet in the first place.


An amazing answer considering you have no idea of the sizing of HIS particles. Please explain how they should be equal to the ones you so carefully analyzed.

The OP's description was normal wear that smears like graphite. This is what I examined under microscope.

And you still didn't give any real answer. The simple fact eludes you so easily. His engine is not yours. They are likely to contain a few differing particles. "Ranges" of sizes, eh?

Just for giggles I've let a half quart of my used oil sit in a glass jar for a couple of days. Even after only 3500 miles in a 7 quart sump, a layer of slime that I'd really rather not have floating around drops.

My comment is simple. Posting sales messages is in bad form. Not impressed.

Since we get engines that easily outlast the trucks they come in with just oil and filter changes by following the OLM, what exactly do we gain?

As I alluded to above, any metallic particle under the filter's rating size will continue to circulate forever. They just float and bounce around, until they break down to smaller and smaller size bits and pieces. When they eventually do reach about 8 microns, they finally become small enough to slide between bearings and the nominal film thickness protecting moving wear parts. (Note: If bigger they just won't fit within the film thickness, so they can't create wear.)

Honestly, the "only way" to protect vital engine parts is to filter out from about 30 microns down to about 1 micron. That way you get the current and the potential critters waiting to eat your engine. (Note: This is typically the exclusive process true multi filter bypass systems use, IE the type in Diesel Trucks and large Off Road Equipment.)

Remember that we don't need to capture particulate larger that what a filter can remove on its own, any quality brand name unit will do the job efficiently. What is important is to change our oil and filter every 5k miles and to be sure to install a Patented Oil Filter Magnet each time.

Documented test results prove engine life (TBO) can be doubled when our Oil Filter Magnet is used and it takes only seconds to insert into the center of your new filter. For the price of a Coke, you'll instantly create a Super Filter that improves particulate filtration by 30 to 40 times. I'll say now what I said in reference to your other post in a different thread ....... Find a way to make the body's last as long as today's engines are already going,THEN you've got something,til then all you are providing is the auto wrecker with the nicest running engine in the scrapyard.
