Magnet in transmission oil pan

Hello ,
I just bought an oversize cast aluminum transmsission oil pan for my Ford conversion van , anyone have any ideas how I can permanently adhere a magnet to the bottom of the pan , I am afraid if I epoxy or glue a magnet to the bottom eventually the transmission fluid might break down the adhesive .. any suggestions ? thanks , Larry

Does it have a drain plug...if it does go with a magnetic drain plug..this way you can eye-ball the condition of the transmission with every drain and fill.

A good rare earth magnet on the drain plug would be the best option.
If thats not possible, I would not recommend any type of adhesive inside the pan.
The magnet should be powerfull enough to sit tight in the bottom of the pan without the danger of being obstructive to the transmission.
A good rare earth magent is cheap and can be found at http://leevalley.com under Small or Large rare earth magnets

Magnets have a hard time sticking to aluminum transmission pans

To me...I would put in a drain plug if it didn't have one...it's easy to do and gives quick time to drain and fills.Other than that an epoxy like quick steel or the like should do the trick.

...drain plug magnet is the best!

Drill/tap a hole through that pretty pan and use a short magnetic bolt for the magnet to stick to.

Thanks for the replies on a magnet in the aluminum transmission pan , it already has a drain plug in pan , although i was hoping to use a larger magnet rather then just the tip of the drain plug , gues i'll try that and change the oil in the pan every other engine oil change , that should keep it pretty clean and free of metal particles ... thanks again ... Larry B.

My transmissions on both my Jeeps came from the factory with drain plugs that have magnetic tips...don't underestimate those little magnets...they are pretty strong...the link that I gave you above makes magnetic plugs for almost any application.I bought two for my engine oil plugs...they work very well.Give em' a jingle and he'll set you up with a plug...they are a great company to deal with from my experiance
