Hi Guys,

I was trying to install Magnafine today .. but I need to get more hose today ... I need to bend hose a bit I wonder if its big deal if flow will be obstructed ?

Its really not to much space In Mazda 3

It's ok to bend it so long as it's not a sharp bend. A rounded bend. Pictures???

I installed my ATX cooler several yrs. ago in my Mazda6, and also had to bend the hose slightly for installation. As long as you don't bend it completely (90 degree angle) you should be ok.

I need to get one of these, as well as an aux. ATF cooler, for my 626. The stock cooler is apparently garbage and a leading cause of failure on these units. Eric since you did it do you know if can you just tap into the existing lines for a cooler? I'd like to run it in front of the rad if possible, don't care if I have to add a bunch more ATF.

If you have a lockup in your Transmission then you need to get an Aux cooler that has a thermostat in it and will only cool once the fluid temp. has hit operating temperature.

I know yours is a Mazda, but in Chrysler transmissions if you cool the fluid too much it stays in partial lockup and wears out components in the transmission.

I can't see why not. I installed a B&M stacked plate cooler in my Mazda6, using the existing lines (Great how to on Mazda6 tech site), and mounted in front of the rad, secured to the hood latch bolts. Mazda in its infinite wisdom never came with a cooler from the factory, considering the heat issues with the Jatco.

Hey Guys :)

Done I used some brass 90 angle connections ... to make it work .. It looks a bit Frankenstein :) but It works .. I got some better clamps :) too ..

How often It needs to be replaced ? 20K Km ?right

I ran one 85K on my Dads caravan trans. It ran on Amsoil from when I put it in as a rebuilt trans to the 85K mark. In otherwords it ran to 85K as well as being broken in on the Amsoil and Magnifine filter.

I tore the Magnifine apart about three months ago and I could not see anything on the pleats. That is a good testimonial for the Magnifine and the Amsoil fluid. I was impressed.

If you email the Magnefine sponsor, I believe he will say more like 30K miles. I think its marked on the filter something like 15K miles.

85,000 miles not KM. The filter says change at 1 year 20000 KLMS? I guess that is Kilometers

Not saying that is what they recommend? But they are being conservative and selling more is a bonus. Also don't forget they have a bypass. Even if they did clog up it would be just like before I had installed the Magnifine filter. I essentially had a new transmission with one of the top synthetic trans fluids out there.

Like I said I did not see one spec of anything on the filter media. I did rip the filter apart and laid it out to inspect.

They do that for the companies protection in case someone has a baffed transmission blowing chunks so they aren't liable. I would say changing it at a longer interval would be fine, especially in an already broken in transmission.

Liability and more $$$$$ Also keeping in mind worst case contamination scenarios. If I know the history of the trans and am running Amsoil I will be going a lot longer than 1 year 20K KMs.

Even in bypass mode the magnet in the filter still works to catch metallic particles. The media is 35 micron.

Here's a link to an article that I put together for the ODYCLUB. While it details how to clean the shift solenoid screens, at the end of it there are a few pictures of the Magnefine after cut open. This particular Magnefine had 13,150 miles (over ~ 9 months of service) on it. I found that the filter was:
A) well made.
B) fairly clean of contaminates
C) had some build up of ferous material on the magnet.

Based on that....I feel that I'll have at least a 20K mile change interval on mine (in the ODY).

I would take a stab that this interval may indeed vary with vehicle and power train. My Blackstone lab reports have all come back good.

See this link for PDF article. I have to warn you it's 4.7 meg: http://dvpatel.homelinux.com/herrhaus/Clutch_Pressure_Solenoid_Valve.pdf
See the following links for addtional pictures of Magnefine filter media after cut open. Magnefine on left while my OEM ATF filter is on the right:

Just some food for thought.

After seeing several magnefines taken apart, and after inspecting 100's of ATF filters/pan magnets....... I truly see the magnefine a good 100k mile filter for NORMAL usage.
I think 30k for a worked vehicle is early enough.
15k changes is a little OCD'ish even for BITOG members like us.

Like anything, if you don't drive much, maybe yanking it every 2-4 years in place of a mileage interval.

herrhaus,
Next time you open a Magnefine, the top part (with the label) unscrews from the rest.....very easy, no cutting needed.

Well

........not sure how I missed that. I thought I looked that thing over. I'll have to check that out. Thanks.

I just walked out into the garage and picked up one of the spare 3/8" Magnefine and gave her a twist.....and presto.....I'm looking at the donut magnet. I'll tell you, looking at it, it sure ain't obvious that it unscrews.

I feel like an idiot for not figuring that out.....however, that's how I seem to learn the best (the hard way).

I do appreciate it. Much easier than using my minigrinder....
