I have read a couple posts on the forum about magnefine inline magnetic filters for power steering and transmission lines.

I have read their web site, but would like some feed back from poeple who use them. What do you think of them and how often do you change them?

Also, Where are you buying them?

Thanks!!

If you buy several, www.bulkpart.com has a good price. If you only buy one, check any good auto parts store--or an automatic transmission repair shop. I've also seen the Magnefine filter packaged under the ATP label. SPX Filtran is another brand of inline filter.

I'm using Magnefine and SPX Filtran filters on the transmission and power steering return lines. I replaced one and opened it. The magnet had some steel particles and the filter element had other particles.

I'm pretty sure that most PS return lines are 5/16", but what about transmission cooler return lines? Magnefine has 5/16 and 3/8" sizes. I have to check my 02 Explorer to see if I can even add an inline filter.

Thanks for the link btw.

I've got 5/16" transmission lines and 3/8" ps lines on the Volvo and 3/8" transmission and 1/2" ps on the Toyota. Magnefine has all three sizes of filters.

My PS and ATF lines are 3/8" and cutting open both the Magnefine and Filtran filters made me a believer. They catch particles that the ATF stock filter does not. And my cars have no OEM PS filter so one is better than none.

I get Magnefine online and SPX/Filtran can be bought or ordered at Autozone.

I ordered 3 3/8" SPX Filtran filters from the link Ken provided. Pretty good price, better than Autozone btw. Two for PS systems and one for the Explorer transmission when the fluid needs to be changed again. I just had the fluid changed at the dealer during the 30k mile checkup. The transmission is one of those that does not have a dipstick so cutting a fluid return line and not being able to top off the fluid doesnt' sound good to me.

What's the mileage lifespan of these filters anyway?
