Really we are talking pretty much the same thing, filtering of the transmission fluid but with 2 different methods. The TP bypass filter is normally placed in line using a trans. adapter which is a straight through fitting using a venturi to divert flow to the input of the bypass filter and on the output of the bypass the pressure is lower so you get a return flow. I personally do not use or recommend this method, but it seems to work for many.
The Magnefine filter is an inline filter and very simple to install and does not restrict the fluid flow. In fact I was going to put one on my 01 today, but many things got in the way, so tommorow. On my 01 PSD with the 4R100 transmission, just cut the rubber return hose up front, and install the Magnefine with the furnished clamps. That simple. (This filter is directional, so make sure the arrow is pointed correctly.) The Magnefine uses a magnet to help capture particles plus filtering media. It does contain a bypass in case the filter clogs. This would be an extreme situation. So this unit is simple, inexpensive and works very well. I will change the Magnefine at 30K.
Now for all the naysayers, "If this thing is so darn good why doesn't the OEM's use them?" Well Ford has a TSB that REQUIRES the use of this filter when a transmission is rebuilt or exchanged under warranty. Failure to do so will void the warranty. This is on the E40D and the 4R100. Not sure on the rest of the Ford line-up. Now you can purchase this at your Ford Dealer with a Ford part number, but be prepared to mortage your house. Much cheaper to purchase from our Site Sponsor. I doubt that the Magnafine can even come close to the filtering ability of a Frantz filter.The Frantz can hold 4oz of water,can the magnafine do that?

First of all you are correct, the Frantz can remove up to 4 ounces of water and can filter very well. But to be more specific, if I have up to 4 ounces of water in my transmission I have problems that no bypass filter is going to solve, so that is a mute point to me. Also the Magnafine will filter to 3 microns in the filtering media, and the metals will be trapped by the magnetic portion of the filter.

Which one do you by for the transmission the Magna
fine filter or the Magnafine performance edition filter?? whats the difference.
I just use the regular Magnefine. I think the performance edition is for show cars, not sure the insides are any different.
I just installed mine this morning. So simple I am ashamed I did not do it sooner. Cut the rubber return line in half, and inerted the filter, and clamped using the 2 furnished worm clamps. Took about 20 minutes, and 10 minutes of that was making sure I was using the transmission return line from the cooler.

Shoot the hard part is gonna be figuring out my return hose is and also how big it needs to be... hmhmm Anyone happen to know the sizes for a E150 van with the E40D trans
