MacDonald's in Europe

Don't know the exact % but IIRC it is in the 20-25% range. Wall ST is real worried about the EU financial crisis softening their revenues and profits.

McDonald’s has spent more than $800 million remodeling 1,280 restaurants across Europe over the past year.

"The brand position is different in different parts of the world," Hennequin told BusinessWeek. "In Europe it's more about the experience.”

In the United States, about 70% of sales come from drive-throughs.

The company hasn’t stopped with the aesthetic, either, as McDonald’s has also tailored its menu to regional tastes. The restaurant first started serving beer in Germany in the 1980s and then in Canada. Customers can order pasta freshly cooked to order in Rome, porridge in the United Kingdom, and a deep-fried patty of beef ragout in the Netherlands.

Perhaps that is why Europe has become McDonald’s highest yielding region, despite having just one-quarter the number of stores in the United States. Last year revenue from company stores and royalties from franchises totaled $8.8 billion in Europe, versus $7.9 billion in the United States.

I think that the difference is in one market, selling to a drive through audience that want to shove as many $1 burgers down their gullet as they can, versus others.

Here, the have MCafe, where you can get a soy latte and choc chip muffin, and sit and surf BIGOT on the free wi-fi, read their free newspapers etc. Mothers get together there, and sit/gossip while the kids play on the in store gym. People on trips use them as a meeting point etc.

I can't believe that there's a maccas thread in "Food, Cooking, and Beverages"

Used oil probably would have been a better choice. Sorry.

I've never smelled anything come out of a car as bad as the local Maccas some afternoons on my way home from work...canola can reek at times.

Some old guy at the McD's down the street was escorted out by the police for surfing porn on his lap-top with the free Wi-Fi...right by the playground.

They use Canadian Rape oil down under? I thought it was just N America that were victims of genetically modified rapeseed oil.

About the only thing we get there is breakfast. It's a baseball gameday tradition for my kiddo. Sausage egg and cheese biscuit. He loves 'em. Won't eat them from Hardees or Whataburger.

Seems to fuel him up pretty good.

Yep, fields of yellow as far as the eye can see in some areas.

So prevalent that the only sure fire way of making compliant biodiesel is to use rapeseed.

Our version is "sausage and egg McMuffin"...

They used to have the "brekky" roll, a long roll with a bagel like "skin/crust", bacon, sausage, tangy sauce, egg and cheese...I sometimes looked forward to work trips to the coastal stations to have one of them on the way through.

I'm thinking the reason McD's is so popular in Europe now is purely a lesson in economics. It's popular because it's cheap belly filling food, which is why it became the number one fast food empire in the States. It's a sign that people in Europe are resorting to cheap, fast crummy food because it allows their Euro to go a bit farther. It means people in Europe are broke.

If Google "McDonalds in Salzburg images" you will see they have the Macky D's sign all decked out in wrought iron; giving the Old World charm to a New World scourge. It is a hop skip and jump from Mozart's house of birth to what might have been his cause of death...

We have the McMuffins. My kid prefers a buttermilk biscuit over an English Muffin.

It's like 500 calories and probably a lot of fat but everyday my grandfather would cook two sausage patties and then fry himself up some eggs, sunny side up, in the sausage fat and have that with similar biscuits when my great aunt or grandmother would make them. Didn't seem to have a negative impact on his lifespan.

We have some similar experiences here.

We used to meet at McD's for a men's Bible Study we had on Tuesday mornings. There were other groups, mostly older men who would meet for coffee and perhaps breakfast.

The stores here have WiFi and many in my community have been remodeled if not completely rebuilt.

The amazing figure to me is 70% of US (or North American) revenue from the drive through.

I personally can't stand the drive through. Actually, a trip to McD's is now a rare thing. Mostly when I'm traveling the past few months and usually to use the WC and get a dollar 32oz diet coke or iced tea.

Or I get the occasional page for work and need to use the WiFi to order parts, look at the case notes, etc.

If you have the right genes and live an active life, you can probably do that.

If I do a McDonalds breakfast, it's the classic Egg McMuffin.

However, I don't find it to be very filling. For the same 300-400 calories, I can make three slices of center cut bacon, a four egg-white omelet with veggies and a modest amount of the cheese of my choosing, usually a smoked cheddar or smoked Gouda.

About the same calorie count and it keeps me satisfied until lunch.
