Got a car needing a paint job soon
Anybody have a story about using a Maaco type retail paint shop ??

Environmental regulations have leveled the playing field somewhat so they are not all that much cheaper than an independent shop, but do you want a minimum wage employee prepping your car?

there are few if any local shops in my area that will do a complete car. aunts very nice, no rust 99 cherokee has been turned down everywhere!!

I used them years ago to paint a work van. They did a very good job, at a great price, and the job lasted. I did my homework first, I checked out their work and asked around about the shop I selected. My expectations weren't that high, and they exceeded them by a long shot. I can't speak to the pricing, this dates back over 20 years now. Bottom line do your homework, you might get lucky like I did. The quality of work can vary from shop to shop, and from one painter to another. I zeroed in on their best guy.

One last thing worth mention. A few of the local shops sent some of their work, repaint work to this particular Maaco shop. They'd do the prep and masking then let Maaco shoot the finish paint. I saw some of that work too, which looked fantastic.

I agree with you. Way too many overly sensitive people on here with questions asked more than once. Usually those folks with over 10,000 posts. Puts them in that God position. Anyway, I used Maaco to paint my MGB way back in 83. Did a great job and held up really well over the years.

Did a decent job at a good price a decade or more ago. Maaco shops in St. Charles County keep opening and closing. None last time I checked (in last month or so) in county of 400,000.

I had an 85 Celica painted there in the late 90's. I wet sanded the whole car, removed everything I could or left one bolt, and removed stuff when I dropped it off. Lights, bumpers, even took out the hatchback glass as I had done some rust repair there. I think they got the idea that I wanted a good job done and they did one. Wanted to hire me, lol. I have also seen mud painted over on some friends cars........

Agreed...and usually they're the same people that get upset when someone actually comments on the old threads that people tell them to look up. They turn around and say...you realize this thread is three years old, right?

Thanks Bud and Railrust
I come here to interject with guys like you guys
We all have question and info to give and gain
But some like MarkM66 just love to [censored] and moan I suppose because they have nothing else to offer to the site
So thanks to everybody who offers good info !ðŸ‘

yup common story. they spray paint pretty good and their paint is good as well but they d crap prepwork and masking. If you let them do that you roll the dice. Best if you do the prep and mask work yourself. them bring it to them.

$900 for that paint job?...not bad. Just from the pics it looks nice. Bet it feels good not driving around anymore in an eyesore.ðŸ‘

I would check with them with regard to how long before you can wax the car, and what they suggest to use. They told me with my van to wait 30 days and not to use a cleaner wax. Things might have changed depending on what they're using now, but I'd ask to be sure.

Pretty sure the rule of thumb is no soap (plain waters fine) and no waxing for at least 30dys, to allow the paint to cure fully (off gas)...

From what I remember though the years of having a vehicle painted the 30 day deal sounds correct to me
