What caused this was a faster car he couldn't catch that was pulling away from his underpowered, poor handling (obviously) inferior BMW. What was it?

He braked late and probably had poop-tacular tires. The other car was quite obviously faster, but he was driving like an idiot too. But at least he knew to brake enough before going into that turn.

BTW, the other car may have been an E92 M3.

The rear-ends look very similar.
 
Good to see people "take it to the track".

He got what he deserved and was lucky he didn't kill someone. Good thing is that it's all on tape so hopefully he gets some reckless driving charges.
 
The driver obviously made two rather large mistakes:
-He misjudged the turn by an order of magnitude.
-He failed to allow a wide safety margin when driving near a freakin' cliff.

There's no need to blame the car. Anything from a supercar to a school bus can be crashed if the driver tries hard enough.

Nope, he was so bent on trying to catch the faster car, that he was oblivious to the limitations of both his car/rubber combination and his own skills.

This guy thought he was the Drift King.
 
I saw him enter turns early apexing, the last turn he entered too early. I suspect he did not know the road well enough to be driving that fast, that and he does not really know how to negotiate turns well.

The faster car was a newer 3, specifically one that was following an older 3 from the freakin' 80's. Those cars would have crashed just as easily had they been driven the same way.
