Hi

After 2200 miles on this Mobil 1 10w30-VSOT-LC20 brew, the oil has turned very black/brown with "0" consumption it appears.

As I remember, Mobil 1 always needed a bit of top off with these engines compared to GC which never seemed to need any.

I wonder if VSOT increases the viscosity to GC like levels?

I plan in late October of next going to a "bridge fill" of Mobil 7500 mix of 5w/10w-30 which will stay until december, then Mobil 1 5w30 until after cold weather goes in March. Then GC will take over.

For the winter fill of 5w30 Mobil 1, how much VSOT? I really dont want to thicken that cold Mobil 1 fill any.

Check out my other post on oil consumption at 8K. A theory I am finding is that VSOT cleans out sticking ring packs very quickly, both lowering oil consumption and raising gas mileage at the same time (if the rings were indeed the cause).

quote:

bobo, VSOT has the adds your motor oil should/would have if the manufactorer was not low balling you, with some surfactant to spread it all around. Generally a bit thick. Boosts the add pack of the oil it is added to if compatible.

from bitog link:

Information about VSOT & LC

I think the LC is cleaning your engine and turning the oil dark,
also, using a PAO such Mobil 1 can have a cleaning effect, PAO's oil formulations do clean the engine, if you will due some searching in the BITOG threads you will find a test that Bob did a few years ago, Mobil 1 did some cleaning of seals that were used in the test.
