anyone have a any thoughts on mixing 4 ozs of lucas oil stabilizer{the older stuff NON synthetic}with M1 snythetic gear oil to quiet gear whine......i just had the pinion seal and bearings replaced and now the rear whines terribly above 50mph.....dealer says everything is ok...so please don't chime in the take it back to the dealer.I put the M1 in after i got it home...changing out their GM snythetic gear oil seems to help some....and the more i drive it it seems to be getting quieter....but i did notice some metal in the oil...like a real fine dark powder....this rear has NO clutches in it so the metal powder i see must be from the R&P.Thanks

try to tell the pontiac dealer that....also the pinion seal area is starting get wet again......gm really has some issues...its dealers are lying *****s

Had an engineer I worked with have a similar deal with a Land Rover.

The dealer only changed the outer bearing (rather than strip the diff), and didn't replace the crush sleeve.

Get it back to the dealer, and if that doesn't work, consumer affairs.

whines 35 and above...whines loudly 50-70 oil looks gray from something..its metal for sure...forget taking it back to the dealer...they basicly told me they did it right GO AWAY!

My father has a 2003 Chevy express van that he uses for expediting across the eastern US and sometimes Canada. The local Chevy dealer changed him $300 to T -Tec the transmission and change out the rear differental oil with the required synthetic oil. After a few trips the rear end started to make a very faint whine. He checked the oil and it seemed that the dealer had used convential oil instead of the proper synthetic. He changed it out with a proper synthetic but the faint whine was still there but has not gotten any worst.

The sad thing was that the Buick dealer across the street quoted him only $125 for the same job after this happened.

That gear set has been setup incorrectly and is in the process of self destructing. No lubricant or chemical "treatment" will alter that. Unfortunately, you messed with it (changed fluid and maybe added some chemicals?) That will diminish your legal case for a court-ordered remedy. Dealing with auto repair places is life in the jungle and stealerships is the darkest part of the deepest jungle. Sorry.

My old Slant Six vehicles which had the 7-1/4 inch differential always seemed to whine, especially my mom's old '75 Dart- sounds louder than a pack of wailing beagles!!!!

You can't change the seal and bearing without moving the depth of the pinion. They simply set it too tight if it's real noisey AND producing metals. It's tricky getting them setup right, it's an art. Done them and have all the tools, guages, compounds, but I don't even claim to be good at it.

well i changed the oil...put m1 synthetic and put a very large magnet on the cover.......it seems to be getting quieter and the oil looks clear...nomo metal...so maybe all the metal was the gears meshing in a new spot...unfortuneatly the pinion seal is leaking...the dealer refuses any refund and wants me to bring it back.....NOWAY!I'm gonna take it to another shop then try to get my 524 back from the CC company...i purposely paid with a CC because i was afraid of this very thing happening.

Good thinking and good luck with the credit card--I hope you can get some satisfaction. I would take the car to an actual differential shop this time, to get it fixed right and to get a professional opinion about the dealer's work.

We don't hear so much about good dealership service--it must exist somewhere--but your thread brings back memories of a few Chevy shops I've dealt with.

i am taking it to another shop...too bad the ring and pinion sing like **** now.....the dealer says...WE DIDNOT TOUCH THE RING &PINION.......so they didn't cause the noise????????figure that one out...i'm not sure where this entire mess is going yet...but i'm not backing down this time.....i'm thinking about contacting gm,see if there is some kind of complaint i can lodge against them.

Is it a Locking Diff? I think TA's had an Auburn Diff option.

From what I understand, locking diff's need a special additive (usually 4oz).

AmsOil and others make it.

Ford's require special additives in Trac-Lok equip'd diffs.

It may be the same as your TA's.

It is starting to sound like the dealer let their car washing man do the job rather than someone who had experience setting op the ring and pinion properly. My guess is they did not use a new crush sleve when reinstalling the pinion gear/shaft. In addition a GOOD differ3ntal person will blue the gears after the setup to conferm the contact size and mesh of the gears. Really sounds like you got jerked off so cancil the CC. You may have some problems because you trid a bandade to fix the problem.

sounds typical for an f-body, almost all of them have gear whine, the rear ends always blow up, the dealer does not wanna do anything, and nobody can fix them right!

Do a search for "lucas" in this section that should inform you of how "quality" this product is. As for the gears the thing that stops places from setting them up right is TIME, sometimes a set goes together perfect other times it takes a bit of trial and error, nobody wants to put the effort in. I did gears in my car and they are quiet but I basically spent a whole weekend on it. Old cars had gears that did whine some but by the 90s OEMs were making quiet ride a priority in new cars the GM gears have something refered to a a Pheonix cut to them which makes them quieter and the pattern more difficult to make look right and a lot of "experianced" techs can have issues setting them up because the pattern looks different than they are accustomed too.
I would find a local club or the like and find out who they like for gears, a recommendation from a club is usually a sign of a shop that can take good care of a customer who knows something about cars.
