M1 excessive iron found in sample

I recently got my analysis back from Blackstone and they told me they found almost 3x the normal amount of iron in my oil. Is this cause for concern? Also, my viscosity decreased as well. I only had 6300 miles on this oil and my driving style was not that aggressive. It was in the truck all winter though, in Nebraska where it can get pretty cold. Should I worry about the performance of this oil and longer intervals?

Another M1 5w30 report shearing to a 20wt. Probably excessive fuel in the oil. Not a good sign at all and showing for M1 5w30.

Welcome! This thread will likely get moved to the UOA forum.

M1 5w30 has been showing UOAs similar to this in the recent past. It's the worst Mobil 1 oil right now IMO. Just choose another oil. If you want/need a 5w30 viscosity grade, Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 is a great choice.

What are those total KHRAP comments from Blackstone?

Sorry for my rant - but please don't lump all synthetics in the same basket as M1. Good gawd, what a foolish thing to say!!

I don't disagree that some conventional oils MIGHT do better than M1 here but.....just for grins.....

Switch to Amsoil 5w30 if you want longer drain intervals. It holds up better.

Seriously thinking about throwing away my blackstone sample bottles after reading those blackstone comments. Makes you wonder how seriously they take the rest of their job, such as Quality Control/Quality Assurance.

02, says that his Iron is 41 and is much too high using Mobil 1 5w30. Blackstone goes on to say that in the tons of samples they have seen over time that synthetics don't go any farther than conventional oils do. They tell the car owner to use dino oil and they bet the iron goes down.

We have the image blocker at work too!

I make mostly short trips across town during the week and then every other weekend I drive to Kansas City which is about 500 miles round-trip of Interstate. When it is cold, I do try to let the engine idle to warm up before I drive it which I now hear dumps a lot of fuel into the oil. But if you look at the report, it only shows 0.5% fuel in it where anything less than 2% is supposed to be okay.

I might have to consider changing oils. I have heard nothing but praise for M1 5w30 until now. I'm not sure what I will use but I too disagree with their statement about dino oils being better. I won't send another sample to Blackstone.

Their comments have been often off-track for years. Doesn't matter if you know how to interpret the results or you post it here and others can for you. Blackstone DATA is good, valid, etc. and is a good value. I recommend that you continue using them.

is this the first run of M1?

I would do another run and check the results again, if the same then I would switch brands.

You would think the every other weekend trip of 500 miles would have done some good.

Find some GC 0w-30. Autozone has it on special for a few more days. 27 bucks w/ filter for 555555 quarts of a good oil.

Working out great! Except my knuckles are split open and my wrist is very bruised as I tried to take off the factory installed oil filter. They practically welded that sucker on there. Finally got it off after it caved in when I crushed it with a pair of channel locks!

Otherwise, the wife and I are very happy with it. It has a very solid feel to it compared with the 2002 Sentra we used to have. Gas mileage is right around 32-33 with 25%hwy/75%city. Engine has 1500 miles on it now, so I expect gas mileage to improve at some point.

Surprised at how wide and comfortable the front seats are. No complaints there. Only real con is that this car really needs a telescoping type steering wheel. If you are taller and the seat is pushed back, it is kind of awkward how you have to reach for the steering wheel. Minor gripe though.

The engine oil filter is very easy to get to and I like how it is mounted that it doesn't spill a drop. Very handy. One other thing I noticed is how much room is in the engine compartment. At first glance, this one is going to be pretty easy to wrench on.

I'd buy another one. For 14 grand brand new, I think it is a solid value. I hear a lot of people call this generation of Corolla bland, boring, etc., but I like it a lot.
