Question for the experts.

I just changed the oil and oil filter on my 2011 Sequoia.

The toyota cartridge filter has no center tube, and the pleats are fully exposed.

The M1 filter (M1C-453) has a metal center tube with small holes.

Since the filter mounts on a center tube, would the M1 filter be more restrictive since the oil basically has to flow through two tubes and small holes on the filter to reach the filter element, where with the toyota filter, just flows through one tube right onto the pleats?

I'm sure it's ok, or M1 wouldn't make it, but am curious anyway.

I'd say it will probably flow just fine. You'd be amazed on how much oil many small holes can flow. But, if you're concerned the maybe stick with Toyota filters. You could contact Mobil's filter tech department and ask them what's up.

I'm a parts guy at a Toyota dealer. I tend to hang around the two techs whose bays are right outside the parts room and shoot the breeze with them while they work. I've probably seen a couple hundred 04152-YZZA4 filters come out of 5.7 V8's in the last couple years. I have yet to see one that was collapsed or deformed in any way. I don't think there would be any benefit to the center tube in the M1 filter. I'd use the OEM confidently. JMO

Old thread but related, but came up in my searches for UOA's of the 5.7 motor.

I now buy M1 filters for my Sequoia because I to run them longer, changing it out every other oil change and I really like the fact they have a seal on each end to prevent any "leaks" around the pleats. I'm sure Toyotas design prevents this, but I like the M1 filter design. I don't like the $12 price, double the OEM, but I feel better running it for 10k-12k.

And the center tube is perforated...so I highly doubt it will be any more restrictive than the OEM.

Why not use the Toyota TRD filter for the Sequoia:

The TRD filter has:

- 100% synthetic glass/polyester blend filtration media that is 98% efficient @ 20 microns.
- Zinc plated steel end caps.
- Red silicone gaskets which provide excellent seal characteristics at extreme temperatures.
- Perforated metal center tube.
- 2 replacement Viton housing gaskets included.

And it's made in the good old US of A and available online or from your local Toyota dealer.

I could but...I buy most everything on Amazon and the TRD filter appears to have all the same features/specs as the M1.

M1 filter $12 (2 for $24)

TRD fitler $17
