Ive got an old 86 Ford i just bought and the cap on the P/S resivoir just says Power Steering Fluid only, well thats pretty vague. Would M1 ATF be fine?

Good point, my 1996 Contour specifies Type F ATF for the power steering as did my old 1980 F-100. I still have the Contour and continue to use Type F with great results after 18 years. My 2002 F-150 spec's Mercon fluid. I'm using Mobil 1 ATF. It quieted down the Ford winter PS whine a lot.

Yep, it's fine.

PS fluid does not have (or need) the friction-modifiers required for smooth-clutch action but other than that these fluids are very similar.

I'm using M1 ATF in my 03 Focus ZX5 as P/S fluid and it is quieter then when I got the car a bit over a year ago. When I bought the car it had a bit of P/S whine, nut much though and since I had 2 qts of M1 ATF laying around I siphoned out the reservoir every week and put in M1 ATF.
I used a bit over a quart of ATF and the P/S is very quiet now.

I use M1 ATF in all my F150's P/S pumps. It works very well and I've had no issues. Been doing it for about 100 years now (about 20 really) .

Yes, it works exceptionally well in Ford P/S pumps

You sound like me. I also have been using M1 ATF for at least 20 years in Ford PS pumps and trans. To date, no failures.

I had Ford Vans and Pick Ups in these years 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988. All called for Type F ATF in their power steering units.

Me 2

I flushed my Taurus ps system with Mobil 1 atf then shortly after developed a huge leak and had to replace the steering rack. I wonder how long it would have gone if I would have left it alone.
