What does Mobil mean by "European Car Formula" with this product?

That it holds the extended drain specs of a variety of euro manufacturers including BMW, MB and Saab. It is also ACEA A3 rated.
Given that youre looking for oil for your MB (per your posts over at mercedesshop), go with a high quality HDEO.

Alot of the german cars have a list of specs and typicallyl recommend a 5w-40 or 0w-40
European formulas have higher ZDDP and TBN I think.

Depends on what specs it meets. Some oils meeting low and mid_SAPS Euro oil specs have lower ZDDP and TBN than any of the usual API SM/GF-4 oils. Your comment is true for Mobil 1 0W-40 and GC compared to the usual API SM/GF-4 oils.
