Grade: Unknown
Klms: approx 5000km

Vehicle: 2007 Kia Carnival (2.7L V6 Hyundai Engine)
Klms: approx 80000km

Oil analysis performed by Roktex.

Laboratory Comments:

* Silicon is slightly elevated and may indicate dirt or gasket sealant
* Sodium is critical and may indicate coolant leakage or salt contamination. Check source
* Other results are satisfactory.
* A normalisation factor of 2.00 has been applied to the wear metals during final analysis.
* Recommend oil be drained and new oil be sampled at half recommended intervals to monitor condition.

I guess I don't understand....Why pull the oil out at 5000km (3000 miles).....seeing that the TBN was 8.13 ???

With the age of your vehicle....its not under warranty.

At a TBN of 8.13....it seems you could have gone at least 15 to 20,000km....IMHO...its a waste of $$, good oil and resources.
 
What does a normalization factor of 2 mean?

Do we know whether Lucas uses Na in their add pack?

Unless you're losing coolant or cannot confirm that Na is in the add pack, going any shorter of an interval is ridiculous.
 
Hi Guys,

Thanks for the comments. This is my first ever UOA. I have not drained the oil as yet.

Should I leave it in and do another UOA in 5000km?

The TBN is still good, so it does seem a waste to drain the oil.

I expected fuel dilution, as this car does more short trips than long ones. Plus when I pick up my daughter from school on hot days, I sit with the engine running and the air conditioner going.

For $29.95, they don't test viscosity.

You don't know the oil grade and the lab' doesn't to a viscosity test. Unless you have an oil pressure gauge I'd dump this oil in favour of an oil of at least a known viscosity.

I'm gonna ring my mechanic and ask him when I get around to it.
 
^By the way, this report looks good as others have said. That is a hard to believe TBN, but sodium is probably from additive.

The lab is trying to get you to pay them more for resampling, total bologna.

Run to 5,000 miles and resample. Ask for a viscosity check too, or find another lab. You know the TBN apparently can make 3,000 miles easily, going to 12,000 km and verifying if the oil holds within grade and you are set.
 
I emailed Lucas Oil and they confirmed that sodium is part of their add pack that meets API SN specifications.

I'll re-sample again in another 5000km, but this time i'll try get the viscosity checked and maybe use a different lab.

2320ppm is very low for sulfur. ACEA E6 and C3 specifyE7 oils are 4500-6000ppm S.

Fair enough, but those are Euro HP and Diesel spec's you've quoted. What are the limits/averages for your regular API SN PCMO?
