lowering tire pressure to ~20 PSI for beach?

The deep sugar sand on the East Coast isn’t anything like pics I’ve seen from places in Texas. I’ve driven to Carova on the OBX in my Forester and have past a stuck Suburban and two stuck Wranglers. The stuck Wranglers there are usually rentals.
Well, once I’m 5-10 miles back on a 22 mile run - there’s no Subaru’s - either Jeep Rubicon’s (many modified) or heavily modified LT’s - maybe the odd 4Runner rigged overlander style …
Ford released a large number of FX4’s with no lockers - this is often what I find stuck on the frame so I don’t know how much deeper the sand needs to be …
I started out saying I don’t air down just bcs in principle the right vehicle does not need to …
If one plans to do it - bring a second compressor … I carry two anyway …

Geez...lockers and sway bar disconnects to drive on the beach? I used to take an '89 Subaru 4x4 wagon out there all the time to go surfing down in NC...Avon etc. when I was in HS late '80s/early '90s. Air down a set of street all seasons and go. Also have done it a lot in a '92 Toyota 4x4 and a '00 Jeep Cherokee...all on basic all seasons and no lift just airing down and driving sensibly/with a lot of offroad beach driving experience in the area. The wagon was fine b/c it had a hi/lo transfer case so a "real" 4x4 system but ground clearance would high-center it sometimes on the big ruts from the big trucks, it was v. easy to get unstuck if it happened and you just had to drive smart and avoid the hazard.
Yes, then I don’t have to air down😉 my $400/each tires!
The sway bar is a button - and after a bunch of lifted trucks with huge tires dig things up - I take a beating in a Jeep so the sway bar disconnects are sweet … These are not gear heads like BrendanC … these are punks who put a lift kit on - huge tires - and still have open differentials - poor gears …
The wrong vehicle can air down to 2 psi and are not getting in …
Folks should read what Astro posted …
I don’t think the sand is different - but you can bet the vehicles are. One drive through our high school parking lots and you’d see …

Man whoever was driving that didn't know what they were doing, my LR3 kicks ass in the sand. Never a problem, aired down or not.

Airing down is nice but not needed always. 4LO is nice too to prevent lugging. and milder (or worn) tires seem to do better. Traction boards are a crutch, if they got you out, you weren't stuck to begin with. I have never found a use for them and I wheel my stuff hard (winches and straps are always a must have IMO).

Yeah, and finding somewhere for boards if you don’t drive an LT …
I carry two army shovels and two “dove buckets” - if preparing to pull out something heavier than the Jeep - make “ramps” for their front tires using the shovels and pack with seawater …
