Lower oil consumption with a high FLASH point oil?

Hi everybody
I know that oil consumption is a fact depending on so many others
but is it just an illusion of mine or have you already noticed the same thing?
I think my VW Polo consumes less now..
Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance.

What oil did you use before and what now that is getting consumed less?

Not necessarily will a higher flash point cause less consumption... Depends on many things, most importantly how worn the engine is...

How's the weather over there?

Hi JAG,
I am using currently the Redline 10W40 (flashpoint
of 478F) and prior to that I was using a dino not
so well known in the United States with a flash point of 420F.
Except from the flash point the base oil is diffent too,does this have to do with oil consumption,what do you think from your own experience?
Noise is lower too!!
Hi StevieC,the engine is new,about 50000kms (31250miles)
Weather is good,mean day temperature of about 15C (60F).
Next week will get worse,but here in Athens it is very rare not to have good weather.

Noack is low on Redline so the lack of evaporative loss could be what you are noticing.

Once oils get used and get fuel dilution, the flashpoints end up close no matter what the oils' virgin flashpoints were.

But evaporative loss is a different matter, as ZZman said. Red Line 10W-40 has much lower volatility than conventional oils of similar viscosity.

There are several other oil-related factors that affect oil consumption too. Viscosity and ring sealing ability are two that I can think of off the top of my head. It's good to hear that Red Line is doing well for you. Tomorrow I'll be putting it in my GTI for the first time.

yes Redline has a low Noack and this must be taken into consideration as well.

yes, unfortunately fuel dilution comes into play after a few miles so when the flash points come closer other parameters become important, maybe the base oil,or perhaps the Noack.
I would never trust something less than 40wt for my VW,considering the weather here in Greece,but there are so many posts and threads about this subject..
