This just happened to me. After a fresh change with GC 0W-30, I started sensing that the car was running a bit cold but, hey it's Winter. I got no warning lites and the tiny analog guage on the 2000 Regal did move up a couple of bars. Heat was fine.
The scan tool showed that while the temp. would be normal in the heated shop, start driving and then less than 170 F. forever. Most non-bitog type would have never noticed this problem. Replaced themostat and all normal (only 400 mi. on the GC).
My theory is the OLM would not have picked up on this either and allowed me to go the full maximum distance.
Assuming the thermostat stayed failed in this manner and someone used the OLM with cheap dino. it probably wouldn't be too good.
